Biography

Matt Monro was born Terry Parsons in north London in 1930, to Alice and Frederick. He had three brothers, Arthur, Reg and Harry and a sister, Alice. It was a tough childhood, his father died when he was three and after his mother became ill, he was fostered out for two years. Leaving school at 14, he tried a succession of jobs without sticking at any of them for very long, before National Service… Read more in Amazon's Matt Monro Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Matt Monro, Singer Extraordinaire, November 7, 2002
This review is from: Walk Away / Invitation to the Movie (Audio CD)
This is but one of many Matt Monro CD's that I have purchased. In my opinion, he is the most talented pop singer of all time. Sadly, he passed away well before his time. Fortunately, we can continue to enjoy his music. Matt's smooth style, emotion and clarity set him apart from all the great ones, even the Chairman of the Board, the Rat Pack, Damone etc. His choice of music was timely and appreciated by his many fans. My favorites are Walk Away, Friendly Persuasion and Love is a Many Splendored Thing. But I really loved this CD. If you are not familiar with Matt's work, do yourself a favor and buy this CD. I promise you that you will soon start to buy all of his albums. I have been a fan for over 30 years and I have most of his music. Believe me, this will be the best money you ever spent on a CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Monro in solid outing, December 22, 2000
By
This review is from: Walk Away / Invitation to the Movie (Audio CD)
Matt Monro--the Brit's answer to Frank Sinatra--tries to emulate the Chairman of the Board with some bouncy big band arrangements, such as "georgia on my mind" complete with blaring brass--but manages to come up short. But don't despair. Monro's magic is how he caresses the ballad and here there are plenty in which he shines: Softly As I Leave You, Born Free, I Will Wait For You, Alfie. We finally get to hear the words to Francis Lai's classic "A Man and A Woman," and after hearing them it's no wonder it was the instrumental that drew raves.

I wanted a Matt Monro music CD with the songs Born Free and Walk Away in my music library. That is exactly what Amazon.com sold me and I love it.
