The Hives make a good return, July 12, 2004
This review is from: Walk Idiot Walk (Audio CD)
After seeing the video for "Walk Idiot Walk" on FUSE last night, I had to go out and get a copy of the single right away since the new album isn't out yet. It's worth picking up for the 2 B-sides and the music video which is one of their best. Check it out...

Attack of the Killer B-sides!, February 17, 2008
This review is from: Walk Idiot Walk (Audio CD)
Walk Idiot Walk is a fantastic Hives song, no question, but the real surprise on this single is the B-sides.
I've heard plenty of Hives songs that didn't make albums, usually they're quite enjoyable but not quite as good as the majority of the album songs.
"Gene Pool Convulsions" and "Keel-Hauling Class Of '89" however, are just as good as ANYTHING on the entire T. Hives album (an album I love, btw), if not better. Seriously, I don't know why these tracks didn't make it on that album.
"Gene Pool Convulsions" is just like "Abra Cadaver" its a very tight, fast, punk-with-a-DEVO-twist kind of song, with a fantastic hook in the chorus ("OH MOMMYMOMMY, OH DADDYDADDY!"). Also, Howlin' Pelle has this cool quiver in his voice when he says "Genepool Convulsions." It easily trumps just about half of the songs on T. Hives.
"Keel-Hauling Class Of '89" is a tight rocker blasting the formalities and cut throat class-systems of college, the stellar lyrics are carried mostly by the tight, thrunderous drumming and about one unwavering chord untill the title is sang at the end of each verse and is matched by an ominous sounding guitar line. This is the kind of song for which I love the Hives, its a perfect moment for the band. In fact, it might just be my favorite Hives song.
I really really hope that one day a collection of the Hives B-sides will be released, because they've made a lot of great songs that didn't get album releases. I don't know if its even possible when they've switched labels just about every album, but i'm crossing my fingers anyway.
These two B-sides take the cake though, and coupled with the single "Walk, Idiot, Walk" is an absolutely thrilling 3 songs.
If you're a Hives fan in any capacity, you need to hear these songs.

Loof forward to the album!, July 14, 2004

This is pretty good stuff. Walk Idiot Walk is the best song of the 3 by faaaaar. The b-sides are just that, b-sides. not all that good. in fact the tag/hook lines in each of the b-sides get annoying after a few listens.
this is good to buy if you can't wait for the new album to hear some new hives, but not worth buying after the album comes out. you can see the video for free at mtv.com or on the hives website.
