Book Description

October 10, 2001
Gareth Patterson has lived as a man among lions and as a “lion man” among modern people. Moving between these two worlds, he has observed the wholeness in lions and the disconnectedness in humans. His extraordinary experience with lions has shown him how lions can teach people Ubuntu — the African sense of belonging. By understanding the author’s profound experiences with lions, individuals can realize their place in nature and discover true spiritual fulfillment. To Walk with Lions describes the seven spiritual principles of the lion: self-reliance, loyalty, fellowship, willingness to care, unconditional love, courage, and determination. By aspiring to these qualities, individuals can learn to live with a greater sense of purpose, community, and meaning.

More About the Author

Gareth Patterson

www.garethpatterson.com

Award-winning wildlife expert, author and public speaker, Gareth Patterson, is known internationally for his efforts to greater protect the lions and elephants of Africa. His wildlife work has featured widely in the media, books and in documentaries. Patterson told of his life with the famous Adamson lions, which he returned to the wilds after the murder of Born Free legend George Adamson, in the books, Last of the Free and With My Soul Amongst Lions (Hodder & Stoughton). His books have been published in many editions and languages worldwide.

It was Patterson who investigated, then exposed, South Africa's sordid canned lion hunting industry (the killing for sport of captive raised lions, shot in restricted fenced areas) as shown on The Cook Report internationally. Facing death threats and other intimidation, Patterson then wrote two books on his findings, Dying to be Free (Viking Penguin 1998) and Making a Killing (Captive Animals Protection Society 1999).

The Secret Elephants, Patterson's latest book (released in October 2009 by Penguin Global) tells of his eight-year odyssey to uncover truths about the world's most southerly elephants, the elusive and highly endangered Knysna elephants of the southern Cape, South Africa. The Secret Elephants has recently been long listed for the Alan Paton Literary Award 2010.

Patterson was the recipient of the Operation Survival Award and of the prestigious Cape Times Environmental Award. He has been an adjudicator for the SAB Environmental Journalist of the Year Awards.

The Search for the Knysna Elephants, a documentary about Patterson's findings on these remarkable elephants has been screened repeatedly on Animal Planet in 2009 and 2010. He is continuing his research on the elephants, as well as undertaking field work on the existence of another mysterious denizen of the southern Cape, the previously unknown about coastal leopards.

The Gareth Patterson Wildlife Foundation has recently been established, and marks Patterson's twenty-fifth year of involvement in the greater protection of African wildlife.

A highly self-motivated person who lives by the adage 'Never give up', Patterson delivers inspiring presentations and talks drawn from his life and experiences.Visit Gareth's website: www.garethpatterson.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Lessons Learned From Lions!, December 7, 2001
This review is from: To Walk with Lions: 7 Spiritual Principles I Learned from Living with Lions (Paperback)
The lion has long been regarded by many peoples of the world as a highly symbolic and spiritual animal. Indeed, we see many powerful and positive attributes in the lion. Many even see a little bit of God in the lion! (I certainly do.) As a result, the lion is found everywhere in our cultral symbolism. But, imagine now being with real lions-- lions who you called friends and soulmates , and whom you lived with in the wild. From this experience Gareth Patterson has seen that the spiritual nature of lions goes far beyond symbolism. Lions have much to teach us that will make us kinder, gentler, yet stronger and and more courageous, but at the same time more balanced and loving humans. Lions even have things to teach us about eternity and the afterlife. If you are willing to spend some quality time pondering the things that make lions lions, yu can start to adopt these positive principles into your own life. Although this book approaches these learning exercises from a meditative standpoint, they are easily adapted to what ever religious worldview you may hold. As a lion lover of many years, I quickly learned that I was already discovering these principles and was beginning to apply them even before I had read this book. So, if you want to really experience the gentle, powerful, beautiful truths that have been till now the domain of the King of Beasts, find yourself a quiet spot and curl up with this book!

What a wonderful book to have and to keep, and to read again and again. There is so much to learn from it. I find myself often relying on the wisdom I've gained from this book to give me strength and courage when I most need it. I admire the author for his love and understanding of lions, and for writing this profoundly inspirational book.

This review is from: To Walk with Lions: 7 Spiritual Principles I Learned from Living with Lions (Paperback)
Gareth Patterson is one of those people who actually do what others only dream. He worked with lions in Africa, continuing the remarkable work of George Adamson. The book is not only a treatise on his work with lions but also points out the spiritual qualities of those most remarkable of animals. Mankind has always had a sort of love affair with the lion. To witness their symbolic use in flags, heralds and crests across the world and throughout history, we know this to be a truth. Gareth Patterson has worked long and hard to help keep the lions of Africa safe. This book is not only a 'must buy' but one that you will keep and take out of the shelf and reread many times. It is also a wonderful gift for friends and loved ones going through stressful times.
