I was walking down the street in my hometown of New Buffalo, Michigan, one fine Spring day in 1963 carrying a new portable transistor radio, an early ancestor of the iPod. Suddenly a song came on from WLS (a once-great Rock and Roll radio station in Chicago) that was unlike anything I had ever heard before. It was the Roof Top Singers' recording of "Walk Right In."

I stopped walking and just listened. Then I walked with a fresh new spring in my step. I was hungry to hear this "new" song again. It wasn't exactly Rock and Roll and certainly not Perry Como. I wasn't sure why, but I had fallen in love with this song. I did not just like it, I loved it. I still do.

The Roof Top Singers had reached back several decades and dusted-off a then rather obscure song that blues man Gus Cannon had written and recorded with his band The Jug Stompers in 1929. The Rooftop Singers had given Gus' old jug band song a fresh, upbeat modern folk sound enhanced by the energetic playing of not just one but two 12-string acoustic guitars backing-up the trio's forthright and joyful singing. I'd never heard anything like it and still haven't to this day. It was fresh, infectious and addictive. A pure, satisfying delight.

Buy this song, and you'll see what I mean.
