Book Description

Using the bold woodcut-like illustrations for which she's internationally known, best selling author Gertrud Mueller Nelson takes two children--and all of us--on a holy tour of a familiar sacred space, the neighborhood church. The format of the book is deceptively simple: a girl and her older brother walk through an empty church. The children name the parts of the building and such furnishings as the pews, hymnals, presider's chair, altar, crucifix, tabernacle, articles in the sacristy, and so on. At the same time, the children discuss the religious significance of each item.

Not a story book, this is a true educational experience for anyone, ages 5 and up, who want to become more aware of liturgical history. Each portion of the text includes a fragment of a psalm so that the "walk" becomes a living prayer.

Totally unique, this book --helps restore a sense of the sacred to one's local church --comes as a handsome hardcover, making it a wonderful gift --will be welcomed by parents, pastors, liturgists and catechists everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sweet and gentle book for children and adults, February 28, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: A Walk Through Our Church (Hardcover)
I know why people like this book. It is sweet and gentle. It introduces readers to the elements of the church, but even more importantly it introduces readers to the mystery of sacred worship, reminds us that giving to the poor is important, and teaches children about quieting their minds, their bodies, about breathing and sacred space. It is a lovely book. The closing scripture on each page captures the spirit of worship. It is much more than a guide through the "things" in a church. I like the berry-nibbling mice on the title page, that little touch for children. It is a sweet book. Helen Gast Meek, Santa Clarita, California

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to items in a Catholic Church, April 10, 2000
By
This review is from: A Walk Through Our Church (Hardcover)
The author very accurately describes the items in the Church as well as their relevance to worship. Very good for young children. There is one glaring error however, near the end the children are pictured genuflecting; unfortunately it has them on the left knee instead of the right. Otherwise an excellent resource.
