Some great songs,
By A Customer
This review is from: Walk Under Ladders (Audio CD)
There is no absolute standard to judge music by, but if there were, Joan Armatrading would pass the test triumphantly. Listen to The Weakness In Me, the mother of all ballads. Or to more up tempo songs like When I Get It Right and I Can't Lie To Myself. Great voice, great melodies, great everything. She's the boss.

the songwriters songwriter at her best,
By
This review is from: Walk Under Ladders (Audio CD)
It's so sad to see only a few reviews sitting under this record. Joan is perhaps the best female singer/songwriter to emerge from the embattled seventies-while most sultry, authoratative voices were pumping out trashy disco romps, Joan was busy singing about real life. Her prolific career has now spanned over 30 years and has amassed a rabidly loyal fan base. Yet Joan never "popped." Not to sound like a music snot, but it takes a truly fine ear to appreciate what she's trying to do. Her lyrics and arrangements are always fresh (unlike some of her talented but somewhat shallow folk rock sisters) and even when dealing with tender subject matter, her songs cut to the bone. Her music either takes your breath away with it's directness or the clever use of metaphor that belies her history as a former aspiring fiction writer. Her voice! I just can't say enough about this woman...

Joan Armatrading and the CD is great but I also noticed the track running order on the back and inside cover is wrong. The correct track running order on the CD I received is as follows: I'm Lucky, When I Get it Right, Romancers, I Wanna Hold You, The Weakness in Me, No Love, At the Hop, I Can't Lie to Myself, Eating the Bear, Only One, and the bonus tracks: Shine, Dollars, Crying. Cherry Pop Records need to have a look at their quality control procedures or develop some.

I of course love Joan's music, nothing wrong with that, but this must be a copy or remake because the play list on the cd is not what is on the jacket. Not sure if they are selling it as an original, but I'm thinking it is a copy. It is still Joan and you can't beat that.

You won't hear a better Side A,

This album was my introduction to Joan Armatrading's music. And, as it is usually the case, it is my favorite of her albums. The inventiveness with which she incorporates Reggae in her music almost creates a new genre. The first half of this album is as good as you'll ever hear. To add my voice to the chorus, "The Weakness in Me" is a masterpiece. If only the second half was as good as the first. Then again, not even the Beatles could have made that good an album.

I've been a fan of hers since the mid '70s, & this is perhaps my favorite album. Best tracks include "I'm Lucky" and of course, "The Weakness in Me". Just got her "Gold" collection, which inludes many of her best songs from the early years, but unfortunately, not "I'm Lucky".

When I heard The Weakness in Me on the Showtime series The L Word I remembered how I felt when I heard it for the first time. A truly GREAT album!

Armatrading's trailblazing nature,
By Lululu (Howell NJ) - See all my reviews

Joan Armatrading is naturally a trail blazer, leading the way for artists such as Tracy Chapman and others. Armatrading is an excellant song writer whose vocal stylings remind me of early Odetta recordings. My favorites on Walking Under Ladders are Romances, At The Hop and Only One. Armatrading's influences has spanned generations and cultures.
