An engaing picturebook illustrated with truly beautiful art.,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I Walk at Night (Hardcover)
Lois Duncan's I Walk At Night presents an engaging picture book story paired with Steve Johnson and Lou Facher's beautiful paintings. Dark drawings pair with the very easy picture story of a cat's nighttime wanderings.

A unique artistic style,
This review is from: I Walk at Night (Hardcover)
"When your eyelids close, I tread on silken toes, Drawn by sweet memories Of caves and jungle trees, Making my way once more Out through the kitty door Into the night."This little poem, told in "first-cat singular," tells of the nighttime exploits of a family cat, who becomes much more mysterious prowling in the moonlight than he is snoozing in the afternoon sunlight. Many fans of Lois Duncan (author of such books for teens as "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Killing Mr. Griffin") will check out this book because of her popularity. After all, a little name recognition never hurts when it comes to selling books. But once you have the book in hand, it likely to be Johnson's moody oil paintings that beckon you to linger over the slim picture book. The illustrations were done in oil paint on paper, some of it brushed, some block printed. Key elements, such as the cat, are then outlined with string that has been drenched in paint. It's a very unique artistic style, and that in itself ought to interest children, who will be tempted to try the effect for themselves.

cats,
This review is from: I Walk at Night (Hardcover)
A delightful picture book that has very little text. It's the "voice" of the housecat we hear and it tells of its daytime and nighttime activities. Cat lovers of all ages will appreciate this book!

A classic for every child's library,

This review is from: I Walk at Night (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my nephew some years ago, and over time it became quite a favorite. Other reviewers aptly describe the gorgeous, stylized artwork that plays the dark shadows off of bright objects like the cat's eyes; the artwork riveted both my nephew and any adult reading the book to him.
The rhythmic, almost hypnotic, text flows beautifully until the end of the book, leaving the reader with a feeling of hushed nighttime, perfect for transitioning the little bugger to bed. What delighted me the most is how early my nephew would be able to finish each of the unique couplings... such "I like the taste of cream/but while I drink I dream/of birds and fishes". Of course, this wonderful book also created a 2-year-old who used the word "saunter" in daily conversation. :) Now that we're expecting a child of our own, this is a must-have for me!

I purchased this book for my granddaughter when she was one. She is approaching her third birthday and I Walk at Night continues to be one of her favorites. The colorful illustrations are appealing, the text simple and soothing, the story meaningful especially if your little one has a cat as a pet.

I love this book. The paintings are beautiful, and the short poem is great, too. It is a great book for cat lovers, which my daughter is already becomming. She loves to look at the pictures of the kitty, and I think it is a book she will enjoy for years to come. I read it to her often, and she is only 6 months old, but seems to really enjoy it. I highly recommend this to cat lovers!
