Product Description

WALK IN BEAUTY

Once, Luke Bernali’s proud Navajo blood and strong carpenter’s hands made genteel Jessie Callahan love him with youthful abandon. But, to his endless regret, Luke faltered and he let Jessie down. Hurt, Jessie left, with a broken heart…and unaware that she was pregnant with Luke’s child.

Now, eight years later, Jessie was back—with a darling daughter in tow. Luke was older—and wiser—and determined to recapture the beauty lost. Could a fierce, desperate long-ago love soar anew on the delicate wings of a child?

This review is from: Walk in Beauty (Kindle Edition)
Barbara Samuel has done it again! This story of Luke and Jessie is is as much of a love story as it is a lesson in human nature and sociology. It is a deep look into the hearts and minds of two people who have had to come to terms with their difficult pasts, learn to embrace the present, and not fear the future. This is not a shallow or silly romance based on attractive h/h constantly lusting after each other. No, this is a deeply moving love story, that will have the reader falling in love with both Luke and Jessie, and also the Navajo people as a nation. Not to say that Barbara Samuel doesn't draw you into this story without describing many beautifully romantic and sexy scenes, she does of couse, and they fit very well into the all around beauty of this contemporary masterpiece in human nature. I didn't want this story to end, and happily I discovered it continues in the book entitled Rainsinger. Being able to follow Walk in Beauty with Daniel's story in Rainsinger made my whole world open up to a people and place I'd never dreamed of going. I will treasure these stories as two that that changed my heart forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another moving romance by the great Ruth Wind, April 19, 2000
Luke was the love of Jessie's life but he was an alcoholic. She was forced to leave him nine years earlier when she discovered she was pregnant. Growing up with an alcoholic Mom, Jessie refused to put their child through the pain and guilt suffered by those who love an alcoholic. Jessie never got over leaving Luke and, although he accepted her leaving him as a punishment for his behavior, he never got over losing her either. Now he's clean and sober and they meet again and are forced to face the past and figure out the future.

This was an emotional read with very human characters who learn to trust and find the strength to love with an open heart. This was a darn good book but I'm warning you it's a tear-jerker. It's a romantic, loving and sensual story.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was actually a really good book!, May 10, 1999

I don't actually enjoy romance novels, but a friend of mine who does sent this my way. I am pretty earthy... into midwifery and breastfeeding advocacy and honesty within relationships. This book REALLY appealed to me. It gives a very positive view of native culture and reserve life (the male lead is Navajo) and presents midwifery and breastfeeding as expected cultural norms. Alcoholism and self-deception are discussed as well. I was VERY impressed and highly recommend this book if you can find a copy!
