5.0 out of 5 stars Just as good as its predecessor
This is the second edition of this book that I have purchased and I'm very impressed with them both. There is of course some overlap between the content of the Excel 2003 version and the Excel 2007 version but the significant difference between the Excel versions means that this book contains plenty of advice specific to Excel 2007. 3.0 out of 5 stars J-walk Excel 2007 tips
This book is a decent reference for someone JUST getting into Excel, without previous experience with earlier versions of Excel. Unfortunately, the book is a bit sparse on "tricks and tips" specific to 2007 (which has a significantly different user interface vs earlier versions). John is a hands-down expert in Excel, so it may just be that Excel 2007 is lacking in...

This is the second edition of this book that I have purchased and I'm very impressed with them both. There is of course some overlap between the content of the Excel 2003 version and the Excel 2007 version but the significant difference between the Excel versions means that this book contains plenty of advice specific to Excel 2007. I've been using Excel since the early 90s and have a Computing Science background but there were still plenty of tips that I could pick up.

It has many useful tips on optimising the use of Excel, particularly for frequent spreadsheet users. The tips and tricks are designed to improve the functionality of using spreadsheets, particularly in enhancing spreadsheet productivity and providing enhanced end-user benefits. In brief, this book will save the average Excel user a lot of "trial and error learning" by providing the necessary quick solutions. Perhaps it is also a fast method of acquiring Excel competency compared to the usual unaided approach.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Excel book with many usefule tips, October 18, 2007
This review is from: John Walkenbach's Favorite Excel 2007 Tips and Tricks (Mr. Spreadsheet's Bookshelf) (Paperback)
Many times, in Excel, it is hard to find help on how to do certain tasks. This book is nicely organized in sections for different types of tips and tricks. Another nice feature is when author uses Excel 2007 functions, he shows compatible solutions for older versions of Excel. I recommend this book for most Excel users (beginners and intermediate level)

This book offers great shortcuts, many of which come in handy often once you learn them. The only downside is that once you find a snippet of information that you like you have to go to another source, or learn on your own, to find out more. This book is great for simple tips, but some tips could use some expanded explanations. Overall though, a great resource.

Love it! This guy sure knows how to write a reference book that you don't have to read the whole thing to understand. Anyone who has a concept of how Excel works can understand this book. Quick answers and practical. Good one!

The book is kind of pricey (but then so are most computer-related books.. well, so are most books, actually) but if you are a frequent user of Excel who uses it for a variety of tasks, this is a good book to have. I think it is good for browsing; yes you can look for specific tips and tricks but I find it interesting just to read through the book to see what sort of shortcuts and illuminations the author has, and to think about whether or not it is something I might be able to utilize.

There's a lot of things I think about when working with Excel that I wonder if there is an easier way to handle, but being in a rush I just do it the way I'm accustomed to doing without taking time to investigate it more. Then I forget about it later. By browsing the book, I run across some of those things and voila, there's a tip or trick that does show me how to accomplish the task in an easier way. It's a useful, practical book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best in class book, December 13, 2010

This review is from: John Walkenbach's Favorite Excel 2007 Tips and Tricks (Mr. Spreadsheet's Bookshelf) (Paperback)
I've been a fan of John Walkenbach's Excel books for awhile. I have all his books relating to Excel 2007 and they are all useful. IMHO, Excel 2007 was a great leap forward for Excel and JW's books made the highly improved features much more accessible much more quickly. For whatever reason though, this particular book is one that I found especially useful & I revisit it periodically. Highly recommended. Book vendor performed well also.

I was looking for a concise book on excel that exposes the hidden gems of this exceptional software without rehashing the manual. And this book has so far met my expectations, to the point, concise. I may have gone thru about a tenth of the book that I am really interested in, but based on what I have read, I am certain the remainder is of high value. If I needed to find more on a feature where this book leaves off, I can always lookup on the internet. I like the way the content is structured, and edited; lends to easy reading.

Every Excel person should have this as a desktop reference. Shows how to do those difficult tasks that we all encounter. A good "cookbook" with clear examples.
