5.0 out of 5 stars Stepping into Faerie, November 29, 2009
This review is from: Walker Between Worlds: A New Edition of the Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies (Paperback)
This is an important book...
dear lovers of faerie lore,
... in the tradition of true tales of Faerie. Both because the Rev. Kirk was writing in a time when these beliefs were extant, even if oppressed, and because of the legend that surrounds him, concerning his own "kidnapping" into Faerie. R. J. Stewart does much to clarify what Kirk has written and has even added words here and there to make Kirk's writing more understandable, although in our case we did not find that necessary in most instances. Stewart's commentary on the text however is great and the appendices quite helpful. In many ways, Rev. Kirk was trying to demonstrate that belief in Faerie was no more ludicrous than belief in Christianity. He does not write however, as though he himself was having conversations with the Elves. (For an imagined version of Kirk and the elves read Matthews' The Secret Lives Of Elves & Faeries: From the Private Journal Of The Rev. Robert Kirk.) Rather, Rev. Kirk was really an early incarnation of Evans-Wentz who wrote The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries (Large Print Edition).
