Book Description

January 2002
Between Heaven and Hell lies Purgatory, Texas--a town with too few saints ... and too many sinners. TO CATCH A THIEF Clayton Walker had been sent to Purgatory...but it felt more like hell. Assigned to solve a string of minor burglaries, the rugged Texas Ranger thought catching the crook would be a walk in the park. Instead he found himself chasing a black-masked bandit with enticing hips and a penchant for helping everyone but herself. And Clay swore he would see justice done, even if he had to shackle the beauty to him for the rest of his life. With quick fingers and a lithe body, Regan Doyle's nocturnal activities knew no boundaries; decked out in black, the young widow made sure the rich "donated" to the local orphanage - whether they wanted to or not. And the fiery redhead wasn't about to let a lawman get in her way - even if his broad shoulders and piercing gray eyes were as arresting as the badge pinned to his chest. But caught in a compromising position - one that revealed far more than her colorful undergarments - Regan recognized that the jig was up ... for Clay had stolen her heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome read, January 9, 2002
By
This review is from: Walker's Widow (Mass Market Paperback)
Martha Doyle cared very much for her daughter-in-law, Regan. Martha's son had been dead two years and still Regan wore black. Deciding Regan needed a push toward romance, Martha arranged for her nephew to come for a part business and part pleasure visit.

Clayton Walker was a Texas Ranger. The last thing he wanted was to travel to the city of Purgatory. But his orders were clear. Clay was to remain with his Aunt Martha until he apprehended the town's thief. It sounded quick and easy. However, Clay kept being distracted by Regan's presence.

Regan Doyle had loved her husband in her own way. Now a widow, she wanted to keep her independence. She took care of Martha and did all she could for the local orphanage. Regan was NOT happy to see a Texas Ranger come to town though! Regan had been stealing from the rich to keep the orphanage going. Then, during one of her robberies, Regan witnessed a murder!

**** This is like a well written Historical Romance and Mystery book rolled up in one. Lots of romance, many tense situations, and more than one thing going on so the reader never gets bored. I could not help but like the secondary characters almost as much as the main ones. Each character had his or her own personality. Great reading here! ****

4.0 out of 5 stars The Welcome to Purgatory series begins, June 23, 2003
This review is from: Walker's Widow (Mass Market Paperback)
Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques

Regan Doyle is a young widow living in Purgatory, Texas with her mother-in-law, Martha. She is dedicated to Martha, feeling that is the least she can do in return for all the family did for her. She never tires of helping those in need, and never asks for anything in return. She hides her passionate nature under widow's weeds, only allowing it to surface in the form of her colorful and racy undergarments. Her only other devotion is to the local orphanage, Purgatory's Home for Unwanted Children. She is unable to have children of her own, so she dotes on the orphans, and will do anything for them, even if it means she must play Robin Hood, stealing goods from the rich folk in the town and donating the money anonymously to the orphanage.

Clayton Walker is a Texas Ranger who comes to Purgatory at the request of his Aunt Martha, to capture the burglar plaguing the town. He arrives, much to his dismay, sentenced to stay there until the crook is behind bars. What he doesn't expect is that no one in town, including the sheriff, who makes no secret of the fact he has no need or desire for Walker's assistance, seem especially concerned over the local thefts. Neither was he prepared for the beautiful young widow of his cousin, a beauty with flame-colored hair and tantalizing curves.

Regan guards her independence vehemently, having no wish to turn it over to anyone, no matter how appealing they might be. She is content to go about her life as she had been. Until one night, when out on one of her "missions," she overhears a murder! She can't reveal what she knows, certain it would reveal her secret life, sending her straight to the hangman's noose.

All the while, Regan and Walker grow closer to each other, unable to resist the temptation standing right in front of them. She is afraid to get too close though, unwilling to give up the freedom provided by her status as widow, and terrified of what he would do if he knew her secret. Now she has to make a choice, does she tell all to Walker, and get his help in resolving the mystery of who committed murder, risking her own neck when he realizes she is the very crook he has been sent to apprehend?

This debut story in Ms. Betts' Welcome to Purgatory series is a delight! She knows her historical facts, as is evident here. She showcases her brilliant use of humor and passion in this story, supplemented with a healthy dose of mystery. One is immediately drawn into the story, and is held enthralled right through to the very last page.

Each and every character is a pleasure, so wonderfully depicted. Regan shows a spunk all her own, and a passionate nature she keeps hidden under a demure facade. Walker is an honorable man, torn between his duty and his desire. When these two get together, fireworks are bound to erupt! The secondary characters were special as well, with Martha adding lightness to the tale, and the orphans (especially Hannah and David) giving even more depth to the storyline. Readers will be happy to know they get to visit again with some of the beloved characters here, in other books in the series.

Had this reviewer not already been a fan of Ms. Betts, this book would have changed that. If looking for a little adventure with your romance, this is the story to read. Kelley A. Hartsell, March 2003.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good Romance!, June 17, 2007
This review is from: Walker's Widow (Mass Market Paperback)
Regan is a widow who lives with her dead husbands mother. She was a theif in the night, stealing from the rich to give to the poor, like a female robin hood. Clayton was sent to Purgatory to catch the theif. Who is also Regan's mother in laws sister's son. Regan's mother in law wanted Regan to get on with her life,(it had been two years since his death.) and Clayton was the perfect man for that to happen.
Book was very good, it kept my interest. I had never read any other books written by Heidi Betts, this was the first and it was good. Maybe it isn't the most entertaining page turner that you can't put down, but it is good ebough to hold and interest.
