Book Description

January 30, 2012
If you hit the snooze button more than once every morning, if you dislike your boss, if you wake up on Monday longing for Friday, if you lack fulfillment in your job, or if you feel like you don’t belong in the industry you are in, then this book is for you. If you’ve always been passionate about something (or just recently discovered a passion), but haven’t had the courage to pursue it yet, then this book is for you.

If you are happy in your current job and just want to read about the trials and tribulations of one New Yorker who found himself at a crossroads and chose to start a new life by trying to build something from the ground up, then this book is also for you.

My name is Max. With brief interludes, I have lived in Brooklyn, NY for nearly twenty years, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. In my past life, I spent several years adding crumbs to my keyboard and staring at spreadsheets working for a large investment bank in New York City. I quit my finance job in the summer of 2009 and haven’t looked back. In fact, my timing was perfect, as the industry has buckled over and vomited on its expensive white shoes.

I now run a successful NY-based tour company called CityRover. Alarm clocks don’t jar me awake at 6:30am anymore. I am my own boss. Quitting my job on Wall Street and becoming an entrepreneur changed my life, and I decided to write this book to share my experience with others who may be stuck in jobs they hate and who may be looking to break out of the mold and pursue their passions.

Great book! Very clever and funny. The writer was able to really get his points across and describe a lot of events in such great detail that I was able to see vivid images of these things happening. No one really knows what goes on behind the scenes and he really put it all out there. He listed out all the positives and the negatives, the successes and the failures, didn't try to sugarcoat anything and told it like it is. The book has a lot of great tips for starting out entrepreneurs.

I really enjoyed this book! Walking away from Wall Street engages you in the story of Max, an employee at a top tier Wall Street bank who decides to leave his job and goes on a soul-searching trip to Europe while finishing his MBA. Max decides to avoid returning to the banking industry and becomes the founder of CityRover, a very unique tour guide company. He offers excellent tips for entrepreneurs, including specific details about the sources he used to start his company and explaining what he could have done better via a lessons-learned approach. The honest and funny story format makes this an inspiring, enjoyable and educating experience!

"Walking away from Wall Street" is a multi-dimensional story which starts with characters and details of the high end financial history unravelling in front of your eyes to charming moments of European travel to building a business. It is the "Eat, Love, Pray" for an ambitious, intellectually curious generation with a zest for life and entitlement for happiness but without prejudice to what it's defined by. Full of practical advice on building a tech business, leveraging various technology tools, it's a must read for anyone who is starting their business but even more so for anyone who is contemplating the meaning of success and happiness.

Most importantly, it's a book about New York City- the inspiration, the stories, and the people you meet...because you never know what brought them here and in most cases, it's remarkable stories like the one you are about to read.

More About the Author

I am going to skip the third-person references, if you don't mind, since the bio below wasn't prepared by some clerk at a publishing house.

My name is Max Vishnev. I was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and grew up hearing the Soviet National Anthem every morning and wearing a uniform to school. I came to Brooklyn, NY, at the age of ten, with my family. My first American experience wasn't seeing the Statue of Liberty from New York's harbor like the millions of immigrants a century ago, but the loss of my talking parakeet, Gosha, at JFK International Airport (Gosha didn't have proper documentation and had to be surrendered to authorities).

During my early days in Brooklyn, I enjoyed chewing Wrigley's gum, learning English by watching Married With Children and Saved by the Bell sitcoms, and eating lots of bananas (a rarity back in Kiev). I viewed the weekly family activity of perusing the sidewalks of our neighborhood in search of decent discarded furniture as a sort of adventure.

A decade later, after college, I got a job at Morgan Stanley. I was ecstatic! I was on my way to fulfilling the American Dream. I wanted to work hard and climb the proverbial corporate ladder, and I tried my hand at that for six years. During my last three years at Morgan Stanley, I worked on a bond trading desk. This period proved very eventful and eye-opening, as I witnessed both the inflating and the subsequent bursting of the subprime housing bubble. It was around that time that I realized that I was on the wrong path and in the wrong industry. So I quit, climbed off the corporate ladder, and put on a backpack.

I backpacked around Europe then spent a semester living and studying in Barcelona. This five-month experience changed my life. I came back to New York a new man, with new a new perspective on life and new priorities. I wanted to start my own business, something travel related, because I enjoyed my time abroad so much, but also because I loathed the idea of returning to the corporate grind.

So I started a company called CityRover and began a new phase of my life. My first year as an entrepreneur was rough. I spent a lot of money, energy, and time on travel-related iPhone apps and email newsletters. Towards the end of that first year, I was close to calling it quits, but decided to roll the dice one more time. I pivoted to focus on walking tours.

A year later, CityRover walking tours (cityroverwalks.com) is one of the highest-rated attractions in one of the most competitive tour marketplaces in the world -- New York City. I finally found my true calling and have never been happier.

I completed my book, Walking Away From Wall Street, around the second anniversary of my company's founding, because I wanted to share my experience with countless others who, like me in my past life, may be miserable in their corporate jobs and are looking towards entrepreneurship as a way out. I also wrote this for first-time entrepreneurs, who may be struggling like I was a year ago.

I live in the city I love, in the borough where I first tasted capitalism with a Daily News delivery route. I look forward to starting my day each morning and being in control of my own destiny.

Thanks for reading and here is to chance encounters on the streets of New York City.
