5.0 out of 5 stars One of the finest albums of any kind to come out of the 90's, June 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Walking Away a Winner (Audio CD)
With this album, Kathy Mattea established herself as one of the elite female, non-Nashville formula country based artists of this decade along with Patty Loveless and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Although a collection of songs by a variety of fine songwriters, "Walking Away a Winner" is a concept album in every respect of the word. It speaks ever so eloquently of the trials, tribulations, and joy of being a woman in the 90's. (I think- I'm just a man). The production is absolutely first class all the way and Kathy and the band provide truly inspiring and meaningful performances. This is on my top ten list of the decade for sure. "Grand Canyon" is one of the finest songs in recent memory. 'nuff said- let the record speak to you for itself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Wonderful, December 27, 2001
This review is from: Walking Away a Winner (Audio CD)
This is one of her best ablums. Including the more upbeat songs "Walking Away A Winner" and "Clown in Your Rodeo." This also includes some of her ballads, where you can hear this singer's voice at its best. Including "Who Turned Out The Light" and "Who's Gonna Know."
One of my favorite songs on this ablum is "Nobody's Gonna Rain On Our Parade," which did not do very well good on the charts, but I feel is a lot better than many songs on the charts today. If you like country-pop I recommend this ablum. Mattea definetly sticks to her country roots, but there is also some pop included in some of these songs. These songs are not like Faith Hill's of Shania Twain's - who are good artists, but do not have a voice like Kathy's. Kathy Mattea is my favorite country singer, she has such a beautiful voice. So if you like Kathy Mattea or country in general, I recommend this ablum.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Winner, July 19, 2001
This review is from: Walking Away a Winner (Audio CD)
Kathy Mattea is one of the best talents in country music, and its a shame she doesn't get recognition. This is a excellent album. I think of it as a sign of the times in many ways. Kathy has always spoke from her heart, and what she's singing was true to issues happening that year, the joys of being a woman, the hardships, problems everyday people face. Plus the album contains two of her best songs (in my opinion) which are "Walking Away A Winner" and "Nobody's Gonna Rain On Our Parade". All of the songs here are excellent and Kathy's voice just keeps getting better with each album, like fine wine. I reccomend this if you are tired of the cookie cutter sound of country music, and want something that goes beyond trying to be pop crossover material, but quality music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Winner, February 14, 2001

O.K. now I will admit that I have not listened to this album in a while but I am going to write a review because I feel this is a very well rounded album, and a well written album. The title track and first single, "Walking Away A Winner" is just the right song with just the right amount of positiveness that you have to cheer for Kathy and her voice goes so well with the song and it helps that the video is funny and memorable. However the next single to be released is by far the premiere song on this album "Nobody's Gonna Rain On Our Parade" this is probably one of my favorite country songs and on this song her voice could not get any better, this song is just terrific and is one of her singature songs, but like I have said before this song did not make the top 10 how in the world it stop just shy of the top 10 is ridiculous hitting #12 if memory serves and it is another underappreciated song from one of the best albums from an artist. "Clown In Your Rodeo" is another favorite of mine on this album. All in all this is Kathy at her best and I also own "Love Travels" which should have done alot better in my opinion.

I remember when this album came out, can't believe its about 14 years ago now. This was probably the most commercially successful albums by Kathy that was a success from the hits "Walking Away a Winner", and several others. Kathy's voice shines and this CD is highly recommended, esp. at these prices.

4.0 out of 5 stars still winning, July 28, 2008
This review is from: Walking Away a Winner (Audio CD)
So this album came out when I was a sophmore in highschool. I always like Kathy's songs from the late 80's and early 90's. You want an excellent album by a true singer, then pick this one up. This album released 4 new songs from her: "Walking Away A Winner", "Nobody's Gonna Rain On Our Parade", "Maybe She's Human" and "Clown In Your Rodeo". In my opinion all 4 songs - different styles of her signature voice. Pay attention to the tenderness she has in "Maybe She's Human" (my favorite song on the album) showing strength for all women. In my opinion they should have released "Who Turned Out The Light" as the fourth or maybe even a fifth single, - THAT IS SINGING!! 9 of the 10 songs here are pure gems (with the exception of "The Cape" which is just ridiculous, but still catchy.) Pure Kathy here!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wins, but does not demolish, July 9, 2007
This review is from: Walking Away a Winner (Audio CD)
This album is a very healthy 4 stars. I just didn't quite feel it enough for 5 stars but it got close. The later part of the album is weaker, and that pulled it down. If the album had kept up the pace of the first half, it coulda had 5. Here are good songs:

Walking a Way a Winner - this title track has great spirit and optimism.

Streets of Your Town

Maybe She's Human - hubby should realize wife has troubles too

Clown in Your Rodeo

Nobody's Gonna Rain on Our Parade - great beat and great feeling. The singer and her lover will do as they please without worrying about the world's opinion.

This is a good CD overall, but there is no outstanding song on it. I always enjoy Kathy Mattea, because she consistently picks good material and delivers it with feeling.
