Walking the Bible,
By
This review is from: Walking the Bible (DVD)
Watching this DVD allowed me to have a greater insite into the bible. I was interested from the beginning to the end of this series and actually wished there was more. Bruce Feiler's presentation of people, places, and events during these periods in the bible gave me good understanding and clarity, it took me on a journey that was very meaningful on several different levels. I would recommend this DVD to those who are not only interest in the religious journey but those who are interested in archeology, geology, ancient architecture, ancient cultures, modern people, a Greek Orthodox chuch, etc. No disappointments here.................. Frankly, I am waiting for the next journey to begin.

I love the approach taken on this. It is not so much an attempt to either prove or disprove the events of the bible, but an attempt to put a "face" (as it were) to some of the locations in the Bible. I don't so much see this as the work done by a skeptic, but by someone who truly wants to understand the whys and hows of the events. If that means ice-caps melted to create the flood, does it necessarily follow that he is skeptical of God? I mean, SOMEONE had to cause the ice-caps to melt, didn't they? As I see it, here is someone who maybe fell out of love with their religion and is trying to understand and renew their faith. At the very least, this is a visually stunning look at the areas of the Middle East that are where the bible was originally written. It is a very fascinating watch.

This is truly an inspiring journey that anyone can share with the Author Bruce Feiler.
I believe that it will renew your interest in not only reading the Bible it will also encourage you to embark on your own personal journey of visiting the Holy Places of Christendom. I highly recommend that every Christian add this DVD to their library. Sub Deacon Nicholas

A profound journey,

This three-part series, based on Bruce Feiler's book of the same name, takes the viewer on a fascinating and profound journey (literally) through the first five books of the Bible. While Mr. Feiler isn't some fundamentalist, he's not some die-hard skeptic either. He went on this journey through Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and Turkey to better understand the Bible, to get a deeper sense of spirituality, and to reconnect with his faith, not to try to disprove everything in the Bible at every turn or to try to find scientific explanations for everything. His enthusiasm for the subject was very infectious, and it was so obvious that as the journey progressed, his sense of wonder and connection to the Divine, history, and the land were increasing. Among the places he visits are the Temple Mount in Jerusalem; Petra, Jordan, where some believe the Israelites to have encamped for 38 of the years of their journey in the wilderness; a place in Turkey where the Garden of Eden is believed to have been; and a 1,500 year old monastery in Egypt, which he estimates has held about 3 million services since its creation and which has a wondrous library. In addition to really making the people, places, and history of the Bible come to life instead of just being words on a page and far-off events in far-off places, it's also inspiring how cordially he got along with people of different faiths along the way. He lodged, worshipped, ate and drank, and talked with Muslims, Jews, and Christians, really achieving the goal of his archaeologist companion Avner Goren, building bridges of peace and understanding instead of avoiding different people and never finding any common ground. Mr. Feiler also ultimately concludes that trying too hard to find a scientific explanation for or historical proof of everything can take away a lot of what the Bible is really all about, a sense of wonder, faith, and spirituality. My only complaint is that it wasn't longer! Maybe we'll see a follow-up one day, in which he geographically explores the rest of the Bible.

This is a fascinating look at the journey through the first 5 books of the bible. It's a visual foundation for stories that all three major religions, the Jews, the Christians and the Muslims, hold sacred to their faith and their traditions. As a documentary, the journey takes place "today" in the midst of the modern-day struggles and misunderstandings that make it realistic and thought-provoking for our faith today.
If you want to understand the bible, this is an amazing way to see the stories that most people of the world hold as sacred to their beliefs and faith.

Walking along on a conversion experience,
By Ado Annie (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Walking the Bible (DVD)
This program is part re-telling of small portions of the Bible and part conversion experience. We are taken along on what starts as a historical/archeological sort of journey which turns into the author/narrator/host's conversion . . a revelation that the Bible is real. This is not a travelogue, but a diary of a trek along ancient routes. Bruce Feiler is not preaching, but sharing his discovery. Enjoy!!

Walking the Bible review,

I saw this originally on PBS and I wanted to get the DVD for my library. This show made me stop and go back and reread many of the stories I had learned in sunday school. Instead of reading words on a page, Bruce Feiler shows you a picture of where it is believed that the events occurred. And what is shown is a lot different that what we've seen in the movies. My only complaint is that it is only 3 hours long. It could have been much longer. When you consider all of the junk that is put on TV and into movies and mini-series, this show is inspirational and very educational.

Brings Biblical Places to Life,

"Bible" here means the Pentateuch, which is natural enough since the host Bruce Feiler is Jewish. This fresh look at the text in light of the probable geographic locations of where the Bible happened is thoroughly enjoyable; simultaneously entertaining and educational. Perhaps a more informative title would have been "Walking the Scriptures," since the Qur'an also revers the prophets covered in the program, and Muslims view the places associated with them as holy. But since the primary lens that Feiler views these sites though is his own experience with the Torah (Bible), the title is a fair one.
