In and Off the Beaten Trail,
By H. Pember (Pepperell, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Walking Boston: 34 Tours Through Beantown's Cobblestone Streets, Historic Districts, Ivory Towers and New Waterfront (Paperback)
I could not recommend this book more highly. If you love to walk, love history or love (or want to fall in love with) Boston this is the book for you. Boston is a fantastic city to walk but unless you are knowledgeable to the ins and outs of it you may find yourself beating the same old path. I was pleasantly surprised to find not only off the "beaten trail" walks but well organized themes, maps, historical details and even Mass. Transit information detailing easy ways to arrive at the starting point of the walks.
Having an over abundance of out of town guests we purchased "Walking Boston" in hopes of finding more than the standard walking fare and we found much more. Great book!

I purchased this to loan to guests when they want to explore Boston. The directions are very clear and the commentary is good but not so long as to make it a chore to use as some guide books are so tightly packed with information that you spend all your time reading and not enough time just viewing. I think we will likely use this guide ourselves to explore some parts of the city that we have not done yet even though we have lived in the area for 40 years.

This book is a great resource because it breaks Boston down into neighborhoods, and walkable sightseeing trips. The routes are clearly marked with sights along the way, distance is noted with ease of walking, and parking lots are noted.
