Book Description

April 30, 1999 5 and up
'Night, night, Knight,' said one Knight to the other Knight the other night. 'Night, night, Knight.' An exuberant anthology of wordplay -- poetry, rhymes, riddles, tongue twisters, limericks, and other verbal tomfoolery. Michael Rosen's love and enthusiasm for language is infectious in this delightful, witty collection that's fun to read and even more fun to recite. From sections of Silly Patter to Nursery Crimes (familiar rhymes with a twist), Rosen knows well the humor that appeals to his young readers. Vibrant illustrations add a touch of visual wit as well.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This anthology of light-hearted poems, riddles, tongue-twisters, parodies and puns contains enough silliness to last through dozens of readings, said PW. Ages 5-up.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-5?Although Alvin Schwartz seems to have a virtual monopoly on children's books demonstrating the peculiarities and foolishness of the English language, there is certainly room on the shelves for Walking the Bridge of Your Nose. Rosen has chosen an attractive mixture of puns, tongue twisters, riddles, sayings, and chants that he promises will leave readers "...baffled, bamfoozled, bewitched, and bedazzled." Some rhymes are familiar, some are not; most are taken from sources that are no longer in print. The selections are scattered across oversized pages and embellished with bright, childlike illustrations that catch the humor and hint at the solutions to the riddles. The colorful format makes this volume more accessible to younger children than Schwartz's titles. An entertaining addition.?Judith Constantinides, East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is so punny, kids don't realize they're learning!, March 30, 1999
This review is from: Walking the Bridge of Your Nose: Wordplay Poems Rhymes (Paperback)
I'm a preservice Language Arts teacher, and since starting my reading block have rediscovered children's books. This was one I *had* to buy. I love wordplay, so I worked it into a literary session with my student. I had planned on reading 4 selections, but she wanted to read the entire book -- so we did! I always use student enthusiasm when I can. There are poems that "teach" phonics, punctuation, spelling, etc. This is more than a grammar book masked as a fun book. It's a fun book in and of itself.
