From Library Journal
Santa Barbara resident McKinney has spent much of his life covering his home state on foot, and in this fascinating, informative, and highly entertaining book, he shares his recollections about many of the state parks he visited. Not all of California's state parks are covered, so this will not be useful as an overall guide to the parks. Where it is useful is in the description of those parks that lend themselves to hikers, backpackers, bird watchers, and nature lovers. California is a state rich in history-the Gold Rush, Native American lands, battlefields, Russian settlements, playgrounds of the rich and famous-and there is an abundance of parks set aside to preserve this heritage. An essential purchase for all public libraries serving patrons interested in the Golden State and its wonders.
