5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and devestating
Collecting the "The Calm Before" and "Made to Suffer" storyarcs, this fourth hardcover volume of Robert Kirkman's ongoing apocalyptic zombie masterpiece The Walking Dead is by far the most compelling, and brutally devestating, part of the series yet. "The Calm Before" is just that, as Rick's wife Lori begins going into labor while the rest of the crew enjoy what time...

3.0 out of 5 stars A bridge too far?
This is an exceptionally hard book to review. I think Kirkman is extremely talented and I think Walking Dead is one of the best comics on the market these days (it's by far Image's best, for sure). And Kirkman is certainly bold - he never shies away from doing what he thinks needs to be done, even if that means some pretty horrific or gut-wrenching action. That kind of...

This review is from: The Walking Dead, Book 4 (Hardcover)
Collecting the "The Calm Before" and "Made to Suffer" storyarcs, this fourth hardcover volume of Robert Kirkman's ongoing apocalyptic zombie masterpiece The Walking Dead is by far the most compelling, and brutally devestating, part of the series yet. "The Calm Before" is just that, as Rick's wife Lori begins going into labor while the rest of the crew enjoy what time they have left, preparing themselves for the onslaught they know is coming. And it does in "Made to Suffer", as the mutilated, revenge driven Governor comes attacking in full force. This is where Kirkman really pulls no punches, as we witness characters who have been in these pages since the beginning of the series meet some shocking, and grisly, demises. Not to mention the surprisingly emotional impact that echoes throughout these pages, as the book comes to a close and a new direction is set. All in all, Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead continues to be a spectacular story of survival horror, and like the best zombie flicks before it, is worth going back to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exposing Human Nature Through Zonbie Apocalypse, September 27, 2010
This review is from: The Walking Dead, Book 4 (Hardcover)
I had to read the first two books (hardback) for an anthropology class in its relation to changing culture in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. And this book is perfect for highlighting not only that, but also the natural condition of the human heart when once simple everyday necessities become rare luxuries. Betrayal, murder, suicide, desperation, and more quickly become norms in the newly established societies of the remaining survivors. The most important theme, however, is that of unity as strangers unite and work together to combat the walking dead and re-establish as civilized society as possible. I had never read a comic novel before I was assigned this one in my college class, and I am lucky I was introduced to such a great first read! This is a highly addicting series though so be WARNED!

5.0 out of 5 stars epic, September 26, 2011

I've enjoyed the Walking Dead for a while now. I like the hardcovers because they look nice on a bookshelf, but I hate waiting for them to come out. I wish it included more cover art in the back as well, but that's something you have to take, I guess. The story keeps killing off the characters I really like, but replaces them with new characters that you can get into. In that respect, I guess it's closer to what you would expect in an actual zombie apocalypse. Great writing and great art. Hope this series goes on for many more years.

This story continiues to be unpredictable and unprecidented. I have not read many stories that were harder to put down. Each character introduced adds so much to the story. With each volume I read my anticipation for the next amplifies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best volume yet in this series, January 3, 2011
This review is from: The Walking Dead, Book 4 (Hardcover)
This volume is a definite game-changer. Many of the plotlines that have been developing over the first three volumes come to a head in this fourth volume, and the concluding series of events here is pretty devastating. I'm pleasantly surprised at the authors' ability to create dynamic, three-dimensional characters that I've come to care about and like--and, sadly, I've come to learn that it's not wise to become too attached to any character in this series. Once again, the authors devised a compelling and tense plot that almost made me forget that there are zombies in this story! The villains are quite villainous and crafty, the heroes are admirable and flawed, and the emotions evoked are genuine and powerful. Very well done--and I'm immediately on to the fifth volume.

Wow, after reading the first 3 books of this wonderful series, I wasn't prepared for the carnage that erupted inside. An absolute must read for anyone who has read the first 3. If you haven't then get it now. This series isn't just about zombies, It's about the human condition and how people survive in a world with a destroyed society.
