5.0 out of 5 stars Very Engrossing, January 7, 2006

This review is from: The Walking Dead Deluxe Volume 1 (Walking Dead) (Omnibus) (v. 1) (Hardcover)
I picked this up and read it over the course of a weekend. It represents quite a journey. The story is very believable, but I didn't realize how much I'd been drawn in by it until I finished reading. Right away, I wanted more. Robert Kirman has a short afterword in which he promises a second hard cover volume after the next twenty four issues come out, and I'm already looking forward to getting it. I want to know what happens to these characters next.

The story and characters are very well done, and the flow of the story benefits from it's ongoing nature. The characters have time to evolve, their plight has time to set in, and the world has time to start moving on. I found myself really emphathizing with the characters as their world fell apart and their food became scarce, I found myself getting excited for them when they found safe places to stay, and I found myself growing sad and angry for them as they faced perils not only from without, but also from within. Kirkman's story telling is straight forward, but he has a strong grip on his world and it's affect on his characters.

The first seven issues collected here are drawn by artist Tony Moore, with the remainder of the book being drawn by Charlie Adlard. Moore is a bit more talented, and his issues look a little better, but Adlard does a fine job with facial expressions and story telling as well. I would have preffered Moore's art for the entire run, but overall the art is good throughout. Also, while this book is black and white, the art is grayscaled very well, giving the book much more depth than most black and white comics I've seen.

As stated in the previous review, you don't need to be a Zombie fan to enjoy this book. I've never gone out of my way to watch a Zombie movie before, but I truly enjoyed this book. Strangely enough, I have now ordered a couple other Zombie books from Amazon to see if I enjoy them as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loooove this book., January 4, 2006
This review is from: The Walking Dead Deluxe Volume 1 (Walking Dead) (Omnibus) (v. 1) (Hardcover)
I really wish I would have waited and got this giant hardcover edition of The Walking Dead. I bought all the trades because I loved the series so much and I couldn't wait.

This is a great graphic novel in all aspects. The writing is incredible as well as the gritty black and white art.

I'm going to be honest, this will scare you. There are some really creepy gorey images in this book so I don't recommend it for children. The good news is you don't have to be a zombie/horror fan to like this book. I actually got a friend that doesn't care for zombie/horror movies to really like it, that's how good the story is.

So I realize 60 + dollars might make you scream when you see it but when you realize that it collects the first 24 issues usually ranging 3 dollars a piece...well you do the math. It's worth the money.

If you've never read it I recommend reading it first, then if you like it well...buy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read, August 2, 2008
This review is from: The Walking Dead Deluxe Volume 1 (Walking Dead) (Omnibus) (v. 1) (Hardcover)
If you love stories set in a world overridden by zombies, this is a no-brainer. If you don't like those kinds of stories, get it anyway. This isn't a book about being chased by mindless zombies. It's a book that dissects human nature and by the end the only thing you will want is the next volume.
