Product Description
Beyond its maze of freeways, Los Angeles is a great place to walk. Step out of your car and set out on foot to discover hidden streets, architectural masterpieces, Hollywood romance, lost canyons, and vibrant SoCal culture in places like trendy Silver Lake, colorful Echo Park, eclectic Venice Beach, and more. Completely updated and expanded, the second edition of this award-winning book--the first in Wilderness Press's popular Walking series--features expanded trips with dozens of additional points of interest, useful new information like nearby Metro stations and stroller-friendly walks, and four new trips to family-friendly South Pasadena, San Pedro's developing waterfront district, Glendale's picturesque Brand Park and quaint Kenneth Village, and the uber-hip Atwater Village.

This two-color, portable guide, aimed at locals and visitors alike, features 38 walks, detailed maps for each trip, original photos, and critical public transportation information for every trip. Route summaries make each walk easy to follow, and a "Points of Interest" section summarizes each walk's highlights.

  • The 38 walks include trivia about architecture, local culture, and Hollywood history, plus tips on where to dine, have a drink, shop, or get a massage.
  • New edition of PMA Benjamin Franklin Award-winning title includes updated and expanded existing routes.

About the Author
Southern California native Erin Mahoney Harris loves to walk, yet she's lived most of her life in areas that wouldn't typically be considered pedestrian friendly. Undaunted, she makes it a point to hoof it whenever possible. She finds walking to be meditative, invigorating and almost always rewarding, as there are so many fascinating features and landmarks in Los Angeles that are easy to miss when whizzing by in a car.

Erin is also the founder and editor of ChillOutLA.com, a guide to health, beauty and relaxation deals in Los Angeles. She currently lives in the Hollywood Hills with her husband and her Golden Retriever/Chow mix, both of whom patiently accompanied her on many of the walks featured in Walking LA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sugar-Coat the Bitter Pill of Exercise, August 28, 2008
By Kathy Webb (Arcadia, California) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Most of us who live in the Los Angeles area are like old-world peasants: we're only familiar with the neighborhoods we live in or pass through at 70 mph on our way to work or school. This book will make you aware that there are fascinating neighborhoods to explore, and that not every neighborhood is a dreary collection of chain stores and fast-food restaurants. It is a collection of walks, pointing out interesting stores, places to eat, historical landmarks, and unique sights along the way. It's a great way to get some exercise while broadening your horizons. The author rates the walks by difficulty; some of those stairways are a bit more difficult than she suggests, but that's a minor complaint. I hope the book gets updated periodically. A must for those who enjoy exploring new areas in their own city.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!, June 28, 2009
By C. Sears (Fullerton, CA USA) - See all my reviews

My husband and I have had a blast on the three walks we've done so far. What a great way to get some exercise and discover hidden gems in the Los Angeles area. I highly recommend this book!!! Each walk is a mini adventure. We've gone to so many places that we never knew existed. No wonder this book received the Ben Franklin award. I'm going to find out what other books the author has written and other books that received the Ben Franklin award. Erin Harris, thank you for writing this book. It's delightful.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best guidebook to LA neighborhoods!, September 15, 2008
By Tone Capone (El Lay, CA) - See all my reviews
This great book is the best local guidebook to discovering cool and hidden neighborhoods in Los Angeles. The writing is funny and irreverent and the walks are well researched and organized in a very easily digestible way.

I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK VERY HIGHLY.
