The Complete Guide to Walking is everthing you need to get started with (or to get better at) a walking program. Mark Fenton covers just about every topic you can think of asking about, from beginning to advanced programs, gearing up for walks, and treadmills, to stretching, nutrition, strength training, and getting you motivated and enthusiastic about walking. His easy writing style, his humor and enthusiasm go a long way to get you off the couch and out the door to enjoy all the pleasures of a good walk. The book itself is beautifully laid out with many color photos, interesting sidebars and stories, and a one-year log incorporated into the book to help you along. The resource list is comprehensive, with clubs, apparel, gear manufacturers, strollers, and walkable-community information. I am using this book as my guide for weight loss and better health, and give it my highest recommendation. If you've never been able to get with any kind of physical activity consistently, this is the book that will help you do it!

i've been walking for a long time but this book got me walking every day instead of once in a while and taught me how to get the maximum out of my walks. i've stopped obssessing about my weight and my whole attitude towards my body and towards the concept of regular exercise has changed. the best thing about this book is that it is a daily, weekly and yearly companion that keeps you on the exercise regime. fenton's writing is guiless and honest -- a friendly push out the door. no criticism, just encouragement to start enjoying the natural movement of your own body. his frankness and simplicity are refreshing.

This is one of the best written fitness books out there (and I've read a ton of 'em). Fenton covers topics from how to start a beginning walking program to competetive speed walking, and everything in between. It's well written and presented and is actually fun to read. More importantly, you'll learn it's fun to walk for fitness. A great start for beginners, but also a good motivator for seasoned exercisers.

I've bought this book four times now, because I show my copy to a family member or friend and they get so excited about it, I give them my copy and then have to go buy another one. This is the best walking book I've ever come across, with good information for the total beginner or the experience walker who just wants some extra motivation. Buy it!

I have read many books on walking, and this is by far the best. It is good for the novice or expert and contains a great progressional walking program that you can jump into at any point.

Good guide for many reasons. Talks about health, your fitness, weight loss and best of all, WALKING. Easy to read & understand. Has several quizzes that are useful. I liked this book so much more than others I've read on the same walking subject. This is a good overall beginners book.

I HIGHLY recommend this book for walkers who need a boost in information about ways to structure walking habits. This book helped / gave me ideas so I could create my own structured walking plan/program.
Since I aquired this wonderful book I am up to 10 miles a day of serious aerobic walking.

Although a book on walking seems redundant, this book is not about the mechanics -- it's about getting your head in the right place and creating a fitness plan.
Walking is portable, inexpensive (though don't skimp on good sock and shoes), and a great way to actually enjoy your neighborhood.
I can vouch for the marathon plan (with no prior fitness required) and love the frank "wait, your excuse is what??" sense of humor.

I have bought copies for friends and still use my original copy whenever I need to refresh my fitness plans.
