Book Description

10 and up
When an earthquake separates Rudy from his parents during their annual family camping trip, the boy discovers a way of living unlike the way to which he has grown accustomed and takes his first steps toward adulthood.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7-- While searching for his dog, who has bolted during a camping trip in the California mountains, Rudy becomes separated from his family when an earthquake strikes. Fortunately, he is rescued by a local sheep rancher and taken under that family's care until his parents can be contacted. Throughout the ordeal, Rudy thinks about his grandfather, a once-vibrant man whose condition after a recent stroke frightens him--even his parents can't understand their son's reluctance to visit the old man in his debilitated state. However, the rancher's aversion to any animal or plant that can't be productive, the emotional struggles of two children who have been abandoned by their mother, and the revelation that a gruff farmhand is secretly tending to an injured eagle teach Rudy a lesson about quality of life that he hopes to hold steadfast until he sees his grandfather again. The ambitious message is more than the story can support; inconsistent and underdeveloped characterization is further hampered by intrusive similes and observations, forced psychological evaluations, and a plot line that has difficulty in moving forward. The cover might mislead readers into thinking this is a wilderness survival story; instead, they will find one about family love and support filled with good intent, but lacking in cohesiveness. --Susan Knorr, Milwaukee Public Library, WI

4.0 out of 5 stars A first rate adventure story., January 3, 1999

This review is from: Walking the Rim (Library Binding)
Walking The Rim describes the adventures of Rudy as he struggles to survive a massive Californina Earthquake while on a camping trip in Northern California's wilderness. The author has taken much care in the description of the Northern coast, and the strange family that takes Rudy in. Her vivid description of the violent quake gave me goosebumps as I lived it along with the frightened boy. And Ms. Lindquists touching scene involving Cerce and her old dog in the barn moved me to tears. I recommend that children who love the outdoors and adventure stories read WALKING THE RIM. They will not be disappointed!
