Walking Fit Kit (VHS Tape, CD, 3 lb. Hand Weights, and Strap with Handles)

This Gaiam kit comes with a pair of 3-pound dumbbells, a strap, a VHS tape and an audio CD. The dumbbells are comfortable to hold, but they are not meant to use when you are walking as that is too much stress on the joints. They are intended to be used with the strengthening routine on the included VHS tape. I really like the strength routine, which is about 20 or 25 minutes long. The instructor is Madeleine Lewis, who is by herself on a platform on a beach. She moves at a nice even pace and gives good form pointers, which is great for beginner exercisers. She goes slow enough that anyone who is above that level could use heavier weights and still follow along. The second half of the tape is a stretching routine with the same instructor. The instruction in the stretch section is done in voiceover, which is a style I don't tend to like. This time she is on a platform in a field and she uses the strap. The strap that comes with the kit is kind of stiff and uncomfortable and doesn't look the same as the one she is using in the video. I have a cotton yoga strap that is much softer and nicer to use. Some of the moves in this part seem a little advanced for beginners. The CD is a guided walking workout. I used my computer to add it to my iTunes library and put it on my iPod. The music is pleasant and Madeleine gives good tips to help keep you on pace as you walk. Overall I like this set, although I wish it came with a DVD instead of a nearly obsolete VHS.
