Editorial Reviews

2014 release from the veteran multi-instrumentalist and acoustic impresario. Walking Through Clay combines deep-running roots in rural American tradition with an overarching artistic vision. Dirk Powell has expanded on the deeply rooted sounds of his Appalachian heritage to become one of the preeminent traditional American musicians of his generation. His ability to unite the essence of traditional culture with modern sensibilities has led to work with many of today's greatest film directors as well. He was a founding member of the important Cajun group Balfa Toujours and has been a regularly featured artist in the award-winning BBC series The Transatlantic Sessions. In addition to performing under his own name in a wide variety of settings, Dirk also tours regularly with Joan Baez, playing seven instruments during each performance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Awkward April 15, 2014
Format:Audio CD
This isn't bad. The arrangements and musicianship are pretty good, and there is a lot to like. Powell doesn't have the voice to pull off noisy music, though. He does wonderfully with quieter, more contemplative and intimate, old-time music, but he can't really hold his own with drums and electric guitar. If this had been Steve Earle in the 1990's or early 2000's, it would have knocked one out of the park, but Powell doesn't have Earle's brashness and growl. He really owns his old-time material, but sounds a little out of his depth here.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER SIDE OF DIRK POWELL March 4, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Dirk Powell comes out rockin' on this one. Drums or percussion are present throughout this energy filled outing. Electric guitars and basses provide driving riffs for an old time banjo or Cajun accordion play over. There is always a rootsy feel to the tunes, from the churchy horn filled ABIDE WITH ME, to the more old timey hill country sound or New Orleans Cajun that Dirk has been associated with. There are contributions from many other session players including Levon Helm on one song. The studio work and production is totally professional. After a few listens, you'll realize that a number of the tunes could easily become hit singles.

Dirk's instrumental prowess is and has been astonishing. Fiddle, guitar, electric guitar and bass, banjo and accordion - it doesn't matter, he's a master of them all. Plus, and this really is a plus, he sings on all the tunes.

This CD shows another side of Dirk Powell. He can let loose and kick it with drum driven rhythms while still staying true to his roots. The old timey and Cajun sides are clearly audible and add a unique element to the mix. It's terrific stuff with lots of energy and memorable songs. yOU'LL LOVE IT.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, but different than I expected. March 28, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have several Dirk Powell CD's and love them all. Great old time musician and plays several instruments. So this CD was a real surprise. There are drums, and other instruments I didn't expect. But since it is dedicated to Levon Helm, it made sense. After several plays in the CD player, the album has grown on me. I really like it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not old timey March 24, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Although Dirk is a great musician in any genre he chooses, this experiment disappointed me and I suspect will disappoint many of his fans who have watched this musical prodigy evolve. The arrangements are hallow and mix too many idioms.
