Reading this delightful retelling of Latin American folklore, it's surprising to realize this is the same author who wrote the three-volume, heart-rending, and unconventional history of America,
Memory of Fire. Teaming up with Brazilian woodcut artist Jose{}Francisco Borges, Galeano depicts the various and delicious ironies of life at the end of this century. For instance, in "Story of the Second Visitation of Jesus," the character in question "arrives hanging from an open umbrella . . . the son of God can't keep the breeze from raising his gown and uncovering his human nudity." All the pieces in this book are short, some as short as a breath. Borges' woodcuts are raw and to the point, a wonderful balance to the luscious words they illustrate. This book offers further proof that Galeano is one of Latin America's most innovative writers.
