Biography

At the halfway point of Lisbon, the sixth studio album by esteemed rock band The Walkmen, front man Hamilton Leithauser sings, “Victory, right beside me / Victory, should be mine.” Arguably the album’s sonic climax, the chorus also serves as an appropriate mission statement for a band on the receiving end of so much admiration but so many false starts.
Formed in 2002 by members of celebrated indie… Read more in Amazon's The Walkmen Store

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic New Band, July 27, 2001
By A Customer

I saw The Walkmen play at Brownies in New York a few months ago and was blown away. Their music combines an obvious appreciation of simple melody with a penchant for fancy musical effects to produce four amazingly complex yet accessible songs. Hands down the best new rock band around. I highly recommend this record.

5.0 out of 5 stars innovative sound that still rocks, August 14, 2001

Walkmen are part of a growing number of of bands in New York City that are taking the Velvet Underground sound, but then going a step further. I listened to this CD and the LP they've released which has three other tracks in Other Music in Soho and felt that it would criminal not to buy such innovative and enjoyable music. I definitely recommend this to anyone who considers themselves a fan of progressive pop/rock.

4.0 out of 5 stars the walkmen deconstruct stuff - give them a chance anyway, December 22, 2001

If New York is a scene again, then the Walkmen are the Television to the Strokes' VU. Just kidding. Well, sort of. The Walkmen are musically sound. Their diverse bag of influences seems to stem from the same record collection the Strokes had (aka VU, Stooges, Television, Pixies) but throw in a little Radiohead, possibly U2 and more of a leaning to 80s pop than 70s raw. But there are definitely twists to keep it interesting. And while we're talking about influences - who cares if a band is derivative? Hey, we're all Post Modernists here, right? There is no originality in rock (there is innovation). Everybody takes what the last guy did and tries to make it better. The Walkmen, like the Strokes, succeed where many, many others fail.
