Carr's first is not Carr at his best,

John Dickson Carr was the acknowledged master of the locked room mystery and of the broader category of seemingly impossible crimes. He is regrettably not as well known today as some of his competitors among the great mystery writers of the 30's and 40's but he should be read by anyone who loves a truly puzzling mystery story. This was his first novel and it shows his great promise in its seemingly impossible murder, hints of the outre or magical, and eccentric detective. It isn't as good as many of his greater stories and like most of them it betrays his inability to write romance, which he unfortunately tries to inject into most of his novels as a subplot. It also is an early example of his scientific illiteracy in its absurd ideas about hashish. Still, it was an entertaining story.
