Product Description

STICKS is a fun multiplayer board game for phones and tablets. It’s inspired by the classical paper-and-pencil game Dots’n'Boxes, but introduces new game mechanics for lots of fun.

With STICKS we want to bring your friends and family closer, because with STICKS you all sit and play around the same device. It can be played by 1 to 4 players – either as independent opponents, or as team play.

STICKS is an easy game to learn, and can be played by kids as young as 5 years. In addition to this it remains challenging enough that adults will find it interesting to play as well.

Simple but effective version of what my brother and I called "boxes" when we were growing up.

You have an array of dots, and you take turns connecting them trying to form a box before the other person does. Who ever completes the box gets credit for it. Growing up, we just wrote our initial in the box and then counted them at the end. In this game, you get points for each box you complete. There are bonus points awarded for boxes with icons, plus an icon that makes you lose your turn if you complete a box with that icon.

You can play against the computer (CPU) in either easy or hard mode, or against other players or teams.

You can choose number of players after you click on New Game, and once you've chosen the number of players and whether any of those players will be the computer, you can choose the layout (Classic or Advanced--Advanced has triangles and polygons rather than squares) and Game Settings which allows you to set the time limits, the number of rounds played in a game, the size of the array and whether or not to pre-take random sticks.

In Options, on the main menu, you can turn off the sound and the tutorials and set the language to either English or Danish.

It's playable in Airplane mode.

Sticks is a reproduction of an old game you probably played in school when you should have been listening to the teacher. The concept is simple; you connect existing dots, placed in a grid pattern, a line at a time and attempt to form more closed rectangles than your opponent(s). With every closed rectangle, you score a point. High score wins. Sticks is a variation of this game.

The app is clean of unnecessary permissions and ad-ware (at the time of this review), according to my scanners.

Though it's obvious Sticks was programmed with care, this is a time when the old adage of "less is more" is truly apropos (check out the game's Credits screen and you'll see what I mean). The Unity game engine, to me, is overkill for the digitization of a simple pencil and paper game, but the speed and size of the app are fine, so I guess it's what the developer knows.

Why the mediocre rating? The game plays fine, but the main screen is simply too distracting. To indicate a player's turn, the developer unwisely chose to animate their information bar. It bounces, spins, whirls, bings, pings, bangs, whistles, and generally makes a nuisance of itself. This flashy show of Unity's animation capability is completely unnecessary here and instead of adding to the game's glamour, it detracts from the apps playability. It's as if the developer didn't quite quit when he was finished and went on a little too long!

My recommendation would be to grab the game now and hope the flashiness is removed later (maybe after the developer reads this review?).

P.S. For those who have missed it, the timer can be disabled in the pre-game settings (not the main menu settings).

5.0 out of 5 stars "Fun For The Whole Family"..."Nice & Clean FAOTD"... August 7, 2014

This is a fun game on an old school classic "Dots & Boxes"..Comes with a very good tutorial and easy to learn... Nice but simple graphics..Good for family and friends to get together and play....Plays well on your phone or tablets... Up to 4 players all taking turns when your color blinks...The colors are yellow, green, blue and orange..You take turns and basically have to capture the last line of the square to gain the most points....The player who makes the most squares wins.....Try to capture the squares with the icons the Question Mark, or a Star for extra points....Don't capture a Skull it makes you lose all your turns....

If you want to play alone you can play against the CPU in your choice of easy or hard mode.....I played along with my husband...

You have these options to choose from: Different Time Limits, Board Sizes, and How Many Rounds....

This is a very clean game with no malware, not one permission, or IAP's....No annoying pop-ups in your face :)

It can be played off line...Playing on Kindle HDX 7' and Samsung S4....

A great little game that can be played with up to four players, against the clock or at your leisure, and on a square or random-looking grid. This is a great way to keep the kids...and the adults...entertained while you're waiting for your food at the restaurant or to keep the calls of, "Are we there yet" from the back seat at bay.

Pros:
- Very well designed game. I really like that the author thought to have the type oriented so you can just set the tablet in the middle of the table and every player can read the tutorial, hints, and such. That's the kind of thing that is lacking in so many apps that it really gives me a boost of confidence in the author.
- The author has added some twists to the scoring with bonus tokens, lose all the points for this turn tokens, and big-square bonuses.
- You can choose from two different seconds/move timers, or turn the timer off for a game with the kids.
- Completely safe. Absolutely no permissions required. Runs without internet access. Exits cleanly with the back-arrow. Absolutely no qualms about adding this to the FreeTime list for my daughter.

So far, I have nothing to report as a Con. The app plays great, looks great, is safe, and is well worth the asking price of $1.00 (full disclosure, I got this as the FAOTD, but if I'd known about it before, I would have paid a dollar for it).

If you like playing games like Dots & Boxes, you'll love this game. Definitely get it while it's the FAOTD, but if you miss the deal, I think it's worth the asking price.
