I bought this as a Christmas present for my 13-month old and my 3-year old boys and they love it. I didn't want the easel type of chalkboard because that takes up too much room, so I bought this and stuck one panel on the bottom part of my refrigerator door (where they can reach it). I keep the chalk and eraser nearby and they can scribble while I make dinner. Sometimes I write out words on it so that they can learn the letters. They don't play with it every day, but it's fun.

This is like a heavy black contact paper but works great with chalk, just like a chalkboard. You can peel it off and it doesn't leave a residue.

Update after 1 year of use: These panels don't clean well so when the kids' hands are dirty or greasy from anything other than chalk, some spots remain on the panel and can't be cleaned. We've only been using one panel at a time, and I'm on the second one now since the first got too dirty. (Of course, since I have this stuck to the door of my fridge that makes it more likely to get dirty.) I'd still buy this product again.

In response to another person's question - I use regular chalk by Crayola and similar brands. I've used the fat sidewalk chalk and normal thin chalk and haven't noticed any scratches.

I originally bought this to have a drawing surface for a toddler in my rented home. Initially, I was disappointed. As other reviewers have said, the surface scratches very easily. Even the chalk that comes with the board scratches.

In addition to the chalk that is supplied, I tried Melissa & Doug chalk. I took a knife and smoothed down the sharp end of the new chalk -- that seemed to help, as does using broken edges. I definitely recommend using the softest chalk you can find.

Crayola chalk (a commonly available chalk that appears perfectly normal to me) doesn't work on the board at all. The sheet we installed became horribly scratched all over. All of that combined to make the adjacent wall a logical place to draw. I wish I'd just bought a real chalkboard.

My daughter long ago stopped using the board (since it got ruined with scratches within a week) and I never got around to taking it down. When I went to remove it from the wall, 3 months after putting it up, it peeled the paint off under the middle of the board. The corners peeled just fine, and I had checked those periodically to make sure it really would just peel off. As with any peel-and-stick item, that was my look-out -- I should have been more suspicious. But the product description specifically says that it won't damage paint, and I was gullible.

So, to recap: expensive, doesn't work as a chalkboard, and damages the wall. Not a winner!

I bought this for my 3 year old to have in her room and on the go... It works great if you want to be able to peel it off and take it some where with you. Sticks great. Wipes easily with a damp cloth. And saves space, not having it in the way. Works with all types of chalk, but it scratches very easily. My daughter went the wrong way to draw and left a big scratch on it. So if using for small ones, you might want to save one or two back. Just in case the others get too scratched up.
Would have gave it a five if it didn't scratch so easily.. But works fine for me.. I just saved one or two to use later.
