Book Description

September 1, 2002
From modest beginnings, wallpaper developed to become a common element of a home's interior-whether it be a castle or cottage. From the printed lining papers of the early 16th century to the computer-aided limited editions of today, wallpaper has played a key role in interior decoration. Chosen to complement the furnishings, it is often used as a way to transcend or enhance the immediate environment. It also reflects the tastes and aspirations of successive generations, as well as the technical innovations of its time. Wallpaper in Interior Decoration offers a fascinating overview of the history of wallpaper. From 18th-century flocks, the exquisite handpainted papers imported from China, and dramatic French scenic decorations to the always-popular designs of William Morris, the washable machine-printed wallpapers from the late-19th century, and embossed wallcoverings, this guide covers all the major styles and influences, displayed in magnificent, full-color illustrations. Part social history, part idea book, part decorative art book, part graphic design reference, Wallpaper in Interior Decoration informs, inspires, and is sure to delight anyone interested in the decorative arts and the best of interior design.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Deputy curator in the department of prints, drawing, and painting at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Saunders looks at "how, why, and when people used wallpaper, what they chose, where they bought it, how they selected it, how much it cost, where they hung it, what they thought of it, and how we now regard it." Beginning in the 17th century and continuing to the present, she details the use of wallpaper in domestic interiors, primarily in Great Britain but also including some examples from the United States. The book is illustrated with historic photos, paintings, sample books, and in-situ examples and employs text from literature and contemporary social commentary. Also discussed is the evolution of the decorative designs. Highly recommended for academic, professional, and large interior design collections.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Wallpaper in Interior Decoration (Hardcover)
In comparison with other wallpaper books I have, this book's illustrations were the same as you would see in other books; however, they were not as detailed. There are better wallpaper books.
