WALNUT HOLLOW-Creative Woodburner Value Pen. This woodburning pen features a comfortable handle; a heat shield to keep fingers cool and a 950 degree temperature tip perfect for softer woods suited for woodburning. This package contains all-purpose Universal Point; plus Flow; Shading and Cone points. This tool accepts other Walnut Hollow Special Technique Points as well. Packaging includes directions and explains uses for each of the tips. The UL list cord features an on/off switch and a stand is also included. Imported.

It's a little odd to see this as a toy. I got one of these for my teens to use to make their grandfather a present. It takes a few minutes to warm up completely, and I think we will have to get a second one so they can either each use one or have a couple set up with tips since it needs to cool down before you can change tips. All Walnut Hollow tips like the Woodburning Special Technique Points II - 5PK set work with these for a lot of versatility.
It's easy to use, a bit like holding a very thick pencil, and when it's heated up completely it does a very nice burn on soft woods. I'd recommend parental supervision for children from 7-10 and don't recommend it at all for younger children unless they are very careful. It does get very hot. It comes with a wire stand to keep it in while you aren't using it to keep the tip from burning anything.
I got some blank wood plaques for them to practice on before they did the boxes that will be the present. They learned what the tips would do on the back of the plaques and practiced on those, then flipped them over to make signs for their rooms. It's a hobby they both enjoy very much. My son does geometric designs he lays out on paper then uses graphite paper to transfer the design, my daughter sketches directly on the wood with a pencil then goes over those lines.

I have had this tool for since 2008. I have used it with my scouts on wood & leather projects. It is a good beginner tool. As with any crafting, practice on scrap first, to get a better finished project.

I ordered this product along with an X-large slab of basswood, also from Walnut Hollow.
I dont know much about woodburning and haven't invested a lot of time into learning what all the attatchments are really used for. But it seems to me that they are self explanitory.
I hooked it up straight out of the packaging and went to town on the basswood after stenciling my design.
Couldn't be happier for my first project, which was a sign for my girlfriends horse pen. I was skeptical about how hot the pen would get and how the process worked but I can tell you it carved like butter.
Just for practice, I would run to the local home improvement store and pick up a good slab of scrap hardwood. I didn't bother practicing because I had a stencil to guide me, but my technique improved as I went along and I recommend you practice and get a feel for it before puting it down on the real deal.
If you are looking to get into woodburning, I recommend this pen.
It was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to ordering more wood to make more projects.
