Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7 Little of Disney's personal life is mentioned in this biography. Instead much of the emphasis is on his boldness as a businessman and his skill at using technological innovations. The book chronicles the development of Disney's business interests, and covers much of the early history and techniques of animation. Fisher touches on the labor difficulties that developed as the Disney studios grew, and hints at Disney's notorious stinginess with his employees. The development of the amusement parks is also covered, although not in as much detail as the growth of the Disney studios. The index is good, but the section on suggestions for further readings is very brief. There are far too few illustrations, all of which are in black and white and several of which lack contrast, and the flip book drawings at the bottom of each page are an unnecessary addition. Of limited appeal, this does give a glimpse of certain facets of Disney's life and character. Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, Ill.

A clear, concise biography of Walt Disney written with children in mind, but written at such a high level that adults would enjoy it as well. The book tells the history of Disney; then focuses on the organization behind Disney's amusement parks giving a hint of the man's genius. Well worth reading, especially given the 100th anniversary of the man.
