With my 8 year old 2nd grade daughter, I recently read this 1969 version of the Walt Disney biography aimed at a young elementary audience. She was totally taken in by the approach - focus on childhood. It does an excellent job of incorporating well known facts about Disney's rural & urban upbringing in a close family where there was sometimes plenty & sometimes not. It does a good job of documenting seeds in Disney's young life that grew into critical parts of his later success. Disney's strong work ethic & invincible spirit are clear. It shows Disney's constantly thinking a step ahead of what was already out there, & how his drive & creativity paid off in the end. Though the book was published after Disney's 1966 death, it barely addressed his personal life & career following the 1955 opening of DisneyLand. After carefully chronicling events up to that point, it glosses over the rest & does not even mention his children, his death, DisneyWorld, Epcot, or CalArts. Now, 40 years after his death, his enduring family entertainment is even more significant. I saw in a listing of books available on Amazon that there is apparently a more recent version, dated 1997. Hopefully this provides the additional meat needed. For anyone wanting more detail on Disney, 2 excellent sources include walt disney family museum website & Disney online archives.
