4.0 out of 5 stars A good buy for Carl Barks-fans, May 31, 2006
This review is from: Walt Disney's Christmas Parade #2 (Walt Disney's Parade) (v. 2) (Paperback)
I bought this comic merely because of its Carl Barks stories, and it contains s nice load of Barks material. Front cover art is by Disney Global Art Pool, coloured by Gary Leach, while the back cover art is a Christmas motif by Don Rosa.

---

This issue contains the following stories:

Donald Duck, "You can't guess!"
Story & art: Carl Barks
(CP 2, Nov 1950)
Colour: Susan Daigle-Leach

This is a Christmas story where almost entire Duckburg is trying to guess what Donald wants for Christmas. For instance, his nephews writes a long list with guesses, and Donald concludes after reading it that they've thought about almost everything except that one thing he wishes for.

This is certainly an enjoyable 25 pages long story. The drawings and colouring are irreproachable, and as usual there's a nice portion of humour in there. (You just gotta love Gladstone Gander's arrogant attitude.)

---

Uncle Scrooge, "You can't guess!" (Pinup)
Art: Don Rosa

This is not a story, but only a one page illustration by Don Rosa based on among other things the first story in this comic book.

The drawing is of decent Don Rosa quality, but the contrast level of the main characters' clothing is too high compared to the various background elements. The Duckburg inhabitants' colours seems a bit sharper, and this makes the whole image seem a little unbalanced. However, it's still a good illustration.

---

Lil' Bad Wolf, "Steals Wood"
Story: Del Connell
Art: Gil Turner
(WDC 196, Jan 1957)
Colour: Janice Miller
Lettering: David Gerstein

This 6 pager is about the wolves, and Lil' Wolf tries to make Zeke Wolf cut his own fire wood by placing a plaque above the fireplace stating that "when you cut your own wood, it warms you twice". Zeke Wolf, on the other hand, tries several corner cutting ways to get free wood, including stealing from the pigs.

---

Chip 'n' Dale, "Before Christmas"
Story: Unknown
Art: Paul Murry
(CID 1, Dec 1957)
Colour: Marie Javins

In this Chip 'n' Dale story, Brer Bear has captured Jimini, and carries him around in a cage. Chip & Dale use their shrewdness to set Jimini free in this 8 pages long story.

---

Grandma Duck, "The Snow Chaser"
Story & art: Carl Barks
(GDFF FC 1073, Jan 1960)
Colour: Travis Seitler

Grandma Duck and the nephews get stuck on Grandma's farm because of snow. They call Gyro Gearloose, and he shows up with a vaporizing device which removes the snow instantly. However, during these 6 pages, the vaporizing tool obviously ends up getting abused by an unfortunate cow, and everything almost ends in a weather disaster.

---

Pluto, "Christmas Doghouse"
Story: Carl Fallberg
Art: Paul Murry
(CP 5, Nov 1953)
Colour: Michael Kraiger
Lettering: David Gerstein

This is a short story (4 pages) where Pluto wants a new doghouse for Christmas. To get what he wishes for, he realizes he has to be a good dog, and he decides to treat cats nicer than he normally would if it was summer. Not only does Plutos kindness invite a cunning cat to exploit him, it also makes Mickey Mouse surprise Pluto in a way he hadn't predicted.

---

Donald Duck, "No place to hide"
Story & art: Carl Barks
(DD FC 256, Dec 1949)
Colour: Susan Daigle-Leach

In this 1 page gag, Donald tries to hide the Christmas presents from his tremendously nosy nephews, with not much luck, despite his creative choices of hiding places.

---

Uncle Scrooge, "Christmas Cheers"
Story & art: Carl Barks
(WDC 268, Jan 1963)
Colour: Susan Daigle-Leach

This is a 10 pager where the nephews wants a new science set, Donald wishes for a big dump truck and the city of Duckburg would like some thousand dollars to finish repaving an old street for Christmas. The only problem is that the only person who can afford these gifts are none other than old Scrooge McDuck.

Scrooge, on the other hand, hates Christmas exactly because he knows everybody will be imploring him for money. The only thing old McDuck himself would like for a Christmas present is a new gold mine. The clever, little nephews figures out a way to make everybody happy.

As in most Barks stories, this too has some funny gags, like the price tag on the dump truck Donald wants:
"$6000.00
$9000.00 (with cigar lighter)"

---

Mickey Mouse, "Postman's Puzzle"
Story: Unknown
Art: Bill Wright
(CP 4, Nov 1952)
Colour: Scott Rockwell

This is a 16 pages long story featuring Mickey Mouse and Goofy. They are making some extra money for Christmas by picking up mail for the post office.

Two pocket-pickers snatch a wallet containing one single bill - a 50,000 dollar bill! To dispose of the evidence before the cops gets to them, they put the valuable bill in an envelope and slip it into a post box. Shortly after Mickey and Goofy appears to empty it, and as they do, the dollar bill flies out of the envelope and gets caught by the wind. An intense chase starts to fetch the 50,000 dollars worth flying about, but the wind sure makes it difficult for Mickey and Goofy to grab it in time.

--

If you are a Carl Barks fan, this issue contains four great classic Barks stories (including the 1 pager), and I'd say you'd get a handful of delightful reading material. The other stories are also good entertainment, and the art and colouring is decent all over.
