5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Carl Barks "Donald Duck" stories, November 13, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Walt Disney's Donald Duck Adventures: Sheriff of Bullet Valley (Gladstone Comic Album Series No. 5) (Paperback)
This book's longest story, "Sheriff Of Bullet Valley," is a comedy of errors in which Donald takes a job as a wild west deputy, then mistakes the bad guys for good guys and decides that the sheriff must be a cattle rustler. Naturally, Huey, Dewey and Louie sort things out and save the day. This volume also features a short Daisy Duck story (yawn.) and a great space-age gem, in which Donald and Gladstone Gander race each other across the globe in super-fast rocket ships. Pure action, pure fun. This is a marvelously entertaining volume in this great reprint series, and features some of Carl Barks' finest work. (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain children's book reviews)

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific reprint comic album series, February 21, 2011
This is a Gladstone Comic Album from 1988, #5 of Donald Duck Adventures. It is a graphic novel over-sized format with high quality paper, biding, thick cover, art taken from the master black and white with new coloring. These comic albums were an incredible deal back then, and still are today. The original comic from the cover story of this book is worth thousands today.
The cover art is the original cover by Carl Barks from Dell DDOS #199.
1) "Sheriff of Bullet Valley" is a very early 32 page adventure, first printed in Dell Four Color Comics Donald Duck One Shot #199, in October 1948 with a cover price of 10 cents. Art and script by Carl Barks. Donald and the nephews are traveling through Bullet Valley, a small western town. Donald asks to be deputized to help find some tough cattle rustlers, he thinks he knows every trick there is since he has seen so may western movies. For a bit of trivia, see the 3rd panel on the last page of the story. The tiny wanted poster on the wall pictures a self-caricature of Barks, according to the Mike Barrier book on Barks. Sine the numbering system had not been aligned yet, this issue was technically issue #6 of Donald Duck. The new numbering system started later with issue #26.
2) "Too Much Help", a 4 page Daisy Duck story first printed in Dell Comics Daisy Duck's Diary One Shot #1150, in December 1960. While the art is by Carl Barks, he did not write this story. That is why it does not hold up to his other work.
3) "Rocket Race Around the World" a 10 page adventure story first printed in Dell Comics Walt Disney Comics & Stories #212, in May 1958. Art and script by Carl Barks. This busy little tale features a rocket race around the world and Gyro Gearloose and a professor hire Donald and the nephews (due to their small size) to pilot their entry. Each rocket must stop in carious countries to pick up proof they landed there along the way, and it all goes well until lucky cousin Gladstone Gander turns out to be piloting the competition's rocket.
The sheriff and rocket stories are big fun with tight scripts, terrific art and lots of laughs. Help get a kid hooked on something good, like Carl Barks comics, it is a habit they won't regret.
