Editorial Reviews

Review

“Floyd Gottfredson’s wily take on the character is revered by the best cartoonists, and Fantagraphics has packaged these earliest serial strips from the 30s in some truly handsome volumes. Take advantage of the two volume slipcover edition for a great value and the publisher’s now signature excellence in presentation.” (Paul Montgomery - iFanboy)

“Over the past few months, [Fantagraphics] have been putting out collections of Floyd Gottfredson's work on the Mickey Mouse newspaper strip, and they're some of the best comics ever put out.... It's incredible stuff, and when you throw in the consistently beautiful design that Fantagraphics gives to their projects, it's something that makes a pretty great gift.” (Chris Sims - ComicsAlliance)

I am currently building a set of high quality comics on my bookshelf.

Floyd Gottfredson is the Godfather of Mickey Mouse comic strips like Carl Barks is the Godfather of Donald Duck comics.

The art is good, the story is good, and the comics are actually funny!

This box set is awesome! The art is good, the story is good, and the comics are actually funny! The world needs Mickey Mouse more than ever before. Today's Mickey Mouse has no personality, but the Mickey of the 30's loved a good fight and enjoyed a bottle of beer with his cheese. Many Disney comics fans will immediatly compare Gottfredson's art to Barks or even Rosa. Don't even try. They are all great and all different. Barks might have had more detailed backgrounds, but Gottfredsoms dailies seemed more animated. But I wouldn't choose one over the other.

A new daily strip like this could single-handidly save the newspaper industry.

When it comes to books, Amazon is hands down the best place to buy them. They always have been. I paid $32.00 for this set; and it is worth every penny.

1. I am currently building a set of high quality comics on my bookshelf. I used to read reprints of Mickey and Donald and Uncle Scrooge in the form of Gladstone comics when I was a child and I still enjoy reading them. Now that I have children of my own, I want to them to be able to enjoy the same stories I used to, and that my parents and grandparents probably enjoyed before me. Their interest has exceeded my expectations; anything that gets children interested in reading is a good thing.

2. These comic strips are presented in their original format. So if you also grew up reading these reprinted in Gladstone comics, be aware that they are back in their original black and white, and are also daily newspaper size. If you are considering purchasing this set, I can't imagine this being an issue.

3. Back when these stories were written, a story line would last months; and consequently, you are getting stories that easily take up 30 or so pages of this volume each. The daily strip format also makes for easy stop points when I'm reading to the children. It is great to see Mickey Mouse being mischevious, adventurous, spunky and clever; a welcome change from the sanitized non-offensive goody-two-shoes he has been marketed as in my lifetime to date.

4. The drawings are simple and elegant and convey a wide range of emotions and expressions; It takes a good artist to get so much detail with so little pencils and a brevity of brushstrokes.

5.

these books are great. the print quality, binding etc. are top notch. the comic strips are classic, i loved the squirrel nut zippers ghost of stephen foster video and this is the era. crazy creative, refreshingly non-PC, ( i want a t-shirt of the shot of Mickey walking around with a 6 shooter in his pants) early mickey is as sassy/bratty and gutsy as the early superman was. contemporary mickey and superman have been tamed down to zero's. these comics aren't just about the art, a lot of the humor translates well. the books are broken up into sections, mickey's on a mission, villains/ confrontation/ resolution, similar to the storytelling format carl barks used in ducktails. i hope these do well, and more volumes are printed!

Taken together, these two books reprint the first four years of the Mickey Mouse daily comic strip. Floyd Gottfredson has been proclaimed the greatest Mickey Mouse comic strip (or comic book) artist, and rightly so. But the book also includes the strips from before Gottfredson took over the feature. These are good, but they can't hold a candle to good ol' Floyd. His Mickey Mouse is perhaps the greatest humorous adventure strip of all time. In addition to the comics, which are beautifully reproduced, there are a number of informative articles about the strip, plus a lot of archival material. Fantagraphics went all out on this one. Highly recommended.

My husband and I are huge Disney fans and I was thrilled that I came across these comics. These are original comics from the 1930s. Mickey is a very different mouse than he is now (humor is different due to the time period), but I wouldn't change that at all. It's fun to take a glimpse back in time to see how the world was through comics. A must have for any Disney fan!

Floyd Gottfredson took over the writing and art of the Mickey Mouse newspaper comic strip and it was never the same. Some of the greatest comic strips you'll ever read - certainly, some of the best Mickey Mouse adventures ever.

Gave this as a gift and was sorely tempted to keep it myself. Very well done. What more can be said about Mickey?

Floyd Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse stories are terrific. His Mickey is a feisty little guy, nothing like the much later Suburban Mickey. These are beautifully produced, slip-cased volumes for a bargain price.
