Book Description

October 31, 2011 Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse

A gift set of the first and second Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse volumes, in a handsome and durable slipcase.

Just in time for the holidays! This collection of books—identical to the individual volumes—ships shrinkwrapped, with the two hardcovers Race to Death Valley (volume 1) and Trapped on Treasure Island (volume 2), , packed in a sturdy custom box designed especially for this set. The perfect gift item.

Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse: "Race to Death Valley": Relive Mickey’s race to a gold mine with Pegleg Pete hot on his heels; Mickey’s life on the lam after being framed for bank robbery; even Mickey’s ringside battle with a hulking heavyweight champ! The premiere volume features a dozen different adventures starring Mickey, his gal Minnie and her uncle Mortimer, his pals Horace Horsecollar and Butch, the villainous Pegleg Pete, and the mysterious and shrouded Fox. Gottfredson’s vibrant visual storytelling has never been more beautifully reproduced; we promise the best reprinting the strip has ever seen, with each daily lovingly restored from Disney’s original negatives and proof sheets. “Death Valley” also includes more than 50 pages of fascinating supplementary features, including rare behind-the-scenes art and vintage publicity material from the first two years of the strip. Critics, scholars, seasoned Disney archivists, and fellow cartoonists provide commentary and historical essays on the strip’s creation and execution.

Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse: "Trapped on Treasure Island": “Oh, for gosh sakes!” Floyd Gottfredson’s classic 1930s Mickey Mouse is back for another round of thrills, chills, and epic quests — taking him from the depths of teeming jungles to the halls of spooky Blaggard Castle. Mickey’s classic Disney bad guys are here, too, with arch-enemy Pegleg Pete joined for this book by the mysterious “Bill Shakespeare” and hypnosis-happy Professors Ecks, Doublex, and Triplex! In this book you’ll relive Mickey’s fight with pirates on desolate Treasure Island; his quest with Goofy to catch ruthless counterfeiters; and his battles to save windy Horace Horsecollar from mad scientists, a robbery frame-up — and himself! Lovingly restored from Disney’s original negatives and proof sheets, Mickey Mouse: Trapped on Treasure Island also includes more than 50 pages of fascinating supplementary features. You’ll enjoy rare behind-the-scenes art, vintage publicity material, and vivid commentary by a full team of seasoned Disney scholars. Walt Disney often said that his studio’s success “all started with a mouse” — and today Mickey is among the world’s most recognizable icons in the world. Now it’s time to rediscover the wild, unforgettable personality behind the icon: Floyd Gottfredson’s Mickey Mouse. Color and black-and-white comic strips throughout

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Floyd Gottfredson’s wily take on the character is revered by the best cartoonists, and Fantagraphics has packaged these earliest serial strips from the 30s in some truly handsome volumes. Take advantage of the two volume slipcover edition for a great value and the publisher’s now signature excellence in presentation.” (Paul Montgomery - iFanboy )

“Over the past few months, [Fantagraphics] have been putting out collections of Floyd Gottfredson's work on the Mickey Mouse newspaper strip, and they're some of the best comics ever put out.... It's incredible stuff, and when you throw in the consistently beautiful design that Fantagraphics gives to their projects, it's something that makes a pretty great gift.” (Chris Sims - ComicsAlliance )

5.0 out of 5 stars So Freaking Cool October 21, 2011
By Ronin
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This box set is awesome! The art is good, the story is good, and the comics are actually funny! The world needs Mickey Mouse more than ever before. Today's Mickey Mouse has no personality, but the Mickey of the 30's loved a good fight and enjoyed a bottle of beer with his cheese. Many Disney comics fans will immediatly compare Gottfredson's art to Barks or even Rosa. Don't even try. They are all great and all different. Barks might have had more detailed backgrounds, but Gottfredsoms dailies seemed more animated. But I wouldn't choose one over the other.

A new daily strip like this could single-handidly save the newspaper industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars anyone interested in old comics should love these February 12, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
these books are great. the print quality, binding etc. are top notch. the comic strips are classic, i loved the squirrel nut zippers ghost of stephen foster video and this is the era. crazy creative, refreshingly non-PC, ( i want a t-shirt of the shot of Mickey walking around with a 6 shooter in his pants) early mickey is as sassy/bratty and gutsy as the early superman was. contemporary mickey and superman have been tamed down to zero's. these comics aren't just about the art, a lot of the humor translates well. the books are broken up into sections, mickey's on a mission, villains/ confrontation/ resolution, similar to the storytelling format carl barks used in ducktails. i hope these do well, and more volumes are printed!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm the guy they call little Mickey Mouse. September 5, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Taken together, these two books reprint the first four years of the Mickey Mouse daily comic strip. Floyd Gottfredson has been proclaimed the greatest Mickey Mouse comic strip (or comic book) artist, and rightly so. But the book also includes the strips from before Gottfredson took over the feature. These are good, but they can't hold a candle to good ol' Floyd. His Mickey Mouse is perhaps the greatest humorous adventure strip of all time. In addition to the comics, which are beautifully reproduced, there are a number of informative articles about the strip, plus a lot of archival material. Fantagraphics went all out on this one. Highly recommended.

Are these strips in color?
I checked the Fantagraphics site and it said Black and white with some color. I remember seeing it was mostly in black and white in the first volume when I saw it in a store. Most of the time, old newspaper color isn't that great unless they decide to completely recolor it. With this project,... Read more
