Stunning,

This review is from: Walt Disney's Peter Pan (Hardcover)
This is the third storybook Disney has published that puts Mary Blair's Disney concept art to it's story, rewritten in this case by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson to match the art Blair left behind. The story at times seems stilted because it has to work with what had already been drawn, but succeeds overall in re-imagining a classic. You will not regret buying this fun storybook full of some of the most beautiful images ever made on the Disney lot. Truly inspirational and a study for anyone in the art/design/animation world.

Masterfully Written,

As I was reading this book to my boys, I kept thinking how masterfully it was being told. Most children I would think have only experienced Peter Pan on DVD. What a joy to read this beautiful, engaging story to my children. If you have read "The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear", you will love the way this book has been written with the same engaging text. It took me approximately 20 minutes to read. I was not overwhelmed by the volume of text at bedtime! The pictures are on one page and a small paragraph on the facing page. The amazing animation by Mary Blair are an imagination gold mine. I wish I had read this to my kids prior to them every seeing the movie. Don't make the same mistake I have!

This is a really pretty book. I can't wait to read it to my kids. I only wish there was more of the Mary Blair artwork. It doesn't have the silhouetted fire dance painting. Lots of wonderful pages though.

More for Me than The Kids,

I love Mary Blair so any book I find with her illustrations, I'm all for adding it to my children's collections, but I must confess, this one might be more for me than for my girls. The illustrations are more abstract and are very loosly drawn. The colors are sophisticated and beautiful. I think my kids will appreciate it later, but for now, as toddlers, they haven't been as drawn to it as I have been. I love the book. I was a bit sad to see some cut lines in the cover under the paper wrap cover.

Everyone knows the story of Peter Pan, a classic tale but nothing surprising. The illustrations in this book are pretty cool, and my 4 year old son really likes this book. The narrative is not my favorite, however (I think it's because of the little side comments that the author makes in an attempt to sound ... hip? modern? ironic? ... I don't know, I could do without them). But overall, it's a good book for a 3-5 year-old and I'm glad we have it.

I purchased this book just for Mary Blair's artwork. The illustrations are great, but I might recommend her "Alice in Wonderland" based on illustrations alone.

I saw this book at the Walt Disney Museum in San Francisco (an adult museum dedicated to the man's life). This book was in the gift shop, but I decided to pass, then changed my mind at home and ordered it on Amazon.
The illustrations are lovely, although many are castoffs, background, or not really defined. Thats ok, because it lends the book a dream-like ambiance. What I really like is how it is written. It is an artful and lighthearted retelling of the story, not the usual heavy handed writting in children's Disney books. |
