World's 1st Stero Soundtrack,
By
This review is from: Sleeping Beauty (Audio CD)
Sleeping Beauty marks another first for Disney. Not only was it the first animated film in Cinerama but it was the worlds first stero soundtrack ablum too! And what a glorious soundtrack it is! Walt took a big risk in adapting the famous Tchaikovsky ballet of Sleeping Beauty for use as the films soundtrack. Not only is the score adapted from the ballet, but even the songs too. Of the songs, "I Wonder" and "Once Upon A Dream" are the standouts, but the others are by turns comical "Skumps" and royal "Hail Aurora". Not only will your kids enjoy this soundtrack but it makes introducing them to ballet a lot easier when they already know a lot of the music. For soundtrack buffs this is one that can't be passed up for historical reasons, Disney fans will not want to miss out on the memorable songs and NO ONE should miss out on the beautiful music. Sleeping Beauty is one of Tchaikovsky's best ballets and this is like a greatest hits package from it. Not to be missed by anyone!

Mary Costa as the Sleeping Beauty,
By Magdalene Pesch (Kirtland, Ohio, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sleeping Beauty (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful CD! It's very comprehensive; I can't think of any of the film's music that is missing from it. Mary Costa's vocals were what inspired to me to love coloratura music when I was very young. My brothers and I still sing "Skumps" when we drink anything together. The music is excellently recorded considering that the film debuted in the fifties. The liner notes and artwork are very attractive. I don't think the CD could be improved in any way. This soundtrack will please any Sleeping Beauty fan.

A little bit of nostalgia,
This review is from: Sleeping Beauty (Audio CD)
For as long as I can remember, "Sleeping Beauty" has been my all-time favorite Disney movie, not only because of its incredible artwork (definitely the best from Classic Disney) but also because of the soundtrack. The music evokes the visual beauty of the artwork. It was adapted from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Ballet, and it is one of the most beautiful, emotional pieces of music I have ever heard. The score is spectacular, especially in the ending scenes (specifically, "A Fairy Tale Come True" and "Awakening"). "Sleeping Beauty" does not have as much songs as later Disney movies (such as "Aladdin" or "Beauty and the Beast") but its quality, not quantity. Mary Costa, who did the voice of Aurora, has a beautiful voice, I always had trouble imagining a real person being able to sing like that when I was younger. Unfortunately, the actual CD isn't available, but all the tracks can be found on the iTunes Music Store. If you're a fan of Disney movies, or just good music, I suggest buying it.

One of the most fantastic scores for a Disney film,
By langleybcguy (Langley, BC, Canada) - See all my reviews

This is an orchestral-type soundtrack, while still including the Disney songs featured in the movie. George Bruns has done an amazing job of adapting Pyotr Tchaikovsky's 'Sleeping Beauty Waltz' to the movie and creating the song inspired by it (Once Upon a Dream). Bruns' score follows the movie closely, especially in track 17 ('Battle with the Forces of Evil'), a bellicose piece featuring brass & percussion sequences as the Prince escapes the Forbidden Mountain and Maleficient confronts him by turning herself into a dragon! Even young children will probably enjoy it as it contains the familiar Disney songs.

Best Disney Film Score,
By Kennedy Smith "Kenk" (Aurora, CO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sleeping Beauty (Audio CD)
While I'm not always a big fan of the musical-esque style of Disney movies (although the kids love it, and that's what matters), Sleeping Beauty is one of the best orchestrated films I can remember. George Bruns does a brilliant job of arranging Tchaikovsky's score from the Sleeping Beauty ballet. The recording itself is decently remastered, and the small ensemble performing is excellent. Mary Costa's vocals are flawless and almost supernatural. If ever there were a disney soundtrack to own, this would be it.

One of the best soundtracks from Disney because it utilizes one of the best ballet scores in history. None other than Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and it makes grand it's statement working with the disney flair, and the genius of music score itself. Great entertainment, and whole new experiance apart from movie. Highly recommended for young and old, and whatever.

A fantastic recording and a must for even the most casual of fans!,

If you like Sleeping Beauty, then you know how integral the music is to the entire film.
That being said, there were a couple of trademark moments that didn't get onto the CD (the moments with Briar Rose in the forest singing with the birds and owl, and the moment after Once Upon a Dream where she runs away come to mind), but I'd say that otherwise the entire score is included. The recording is of outstanding quality, especially for it being almost 50 years old! Each instrument is heard clearly, and the vocal tracks are in great shape as well. They did a fantastic job with their restoration!
