4.0 out of 5 stars beautifully illustrated comic book, April 28, 2000
This review is from: Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge & Donald Duck: The Sunken City (Gladstone Giant Comic Album Series, No. 2) (Gladstone Giant Comic Album Ser. : No.2) (Paperback)
Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck Giant Special #2 has an introduction by Geoffrey Blum and two full-length stories--"The Sunken City" and "Luck of the North." The first has Scrooge descending to Atlantis in search of the rarest coin in the world. The second has Donald sending Gladstone to the arctic with a phony map and then feeling guilty. It's Donald and the nephews to the rescue. The colors are vivid and the stories are even more fun than the later Duck Tales cartoon series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the purchase..., February 15, 2002

This review is from: Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge & Donald Duck: The Sunken City (Gladstone Giant Comic Album Series, No. 2) (Gladstone Giant Comic Album Ser. : No.2) (Paperback)
There is a lot to like about this volume of Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck by Carl Barks. The two major stories (as well as the few single page gags) are beautifully drawn, vibrantly colored, and highly entertaining. The humor in the first half of "The Sunken City" is enough to get my recommendation. Yet the strorytelling (particularly in the SECOND half of "Sunken City") is not as satisfying as one would hope from a talent like Mr. Barks. The conclusion seems arbitrary and rushed, and the potential of this Atlantis story is never really explored. But don't get me wrong. The strengths far outweigh the shortcomings. The second story, "Luck of the North", also has it's moments and the packaging of the two stories together make this a good investment for anyone interested in the Disney ducks, Carl Barks, or just wonderful comic-book work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scrooge and Donald, by Carl Barks, December 22, 2010
This review is from: Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge & Donald Duck: The Sunken City (Gladstone Giant Comic Album Series, No. 2) (Gladstone Giant Comic Album Ser. : No.2) (Paperback)
This is Gladstone Comic Album Giant Special #2 Uncle Scrooge & Donald Duck. Printed in 1989 before the Carl Barks Library in Color books, it shows the care that Gladstone gave to reprinting classic stories by the good duck artist Carl Barks, who drew Disney comics from the 1940's to the 1960's. This extra thick issue is a real treat. I love this book! The stories are top knotch. The cover art is by a modern duck artist, Don Rosa. The titles inside and their origins are:

1) "The Sunken City" is a big 32 page adventure story, first published in Dell Four Color Comics Uncle Scrooge #5 in March-May 1954. Art and script by Carl Barks. Barks is clearly in his element here, in an adventure story that eventually lands up in Atlantis. The first panel shows miserly Scrooge poring over his books to find someone that owes him a dime.
2) A 1 page gag of Scrooge first published in Dell Four Color Comics Uncle Scrooge #5 in March-May 1954. Art and script by Carl Barks.
3) Another 1 page gag of Scrooge first published in Dell Four Color Comics Uncle Scrooge #5 in March-May 1954. Art and script by Carl Barks.
4) Another 1 page gag, vintage Donald Duck this time from Dell Four Color Comics Donald Duck one shot #178, December 1947, with art and script by Barks.
5) "Luck of the North", first published in Dell Four Color Comics one shot #256, December 1949, with art and script by Barks. Also has a reprint inside of the cover art for this story, by Barks. The 32 page story is notable for the first appearance of Gladstone Gander, who was meant to be a 1 issue character. Donald looks to get revenge on his lucky but galling cousin Gladstone, so he plants a fake map of a uranium mine at the North pole to fool him. When he finds out that Gladstone has indeed left for the Pole, the guilt eats away at Donald until he decides he and the nephews should go rescue him. When he arrives, the story is just getting warmed up as a rare Viking ship is discovered.
