This review is from: Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge: The Mines of King Solomon (Gladstone Comic Album Series No. 1) (Paperback)
I must be getting old, because I've started seeking out certain nostalgic items that I vaguely remember enjoying when I was younger. Of these, the most enjoyable and satisfying by far are the Gladstone comic albums.
Carl Barks breathes such life into the Disney characters he drew. Rather than cluttering each panel with inside jokes or obscure hidden meanings, his spare style and great use of perspective makes the stories flow extremely well. There's absolutely nothing negative that can be said about the content of these fantastic volumes. The binding, on the other hand, leaves something to be desired. Like other reviewers have stated, the cover pops off the bound pages so quickly it's like they used a mixture of flour and water for the glue. Comic book purists may want to turn away now, but the easiest way I found to put it all back together is to run a thin bead of Gorilla Glue along the inside of the cover, shove the pages up against the glue, and leave it overnight. Ain't pretty, but that cover's never coming off again. These comic treasuries are highly recommended.

But what's in this issue, you ask...,
This review is from: Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge: The Mines of King Solomon (Gladstone Comic Album Series No. 1) (Paperback)
You may already know that there was a "good duck artist", who did the best Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge stories ever, which he started on in 1942 until his "official retirement" in 1966. (The publisher cajoled him on art for little projects until 1968, and he wrote some basic scripts now and then to 1974). And you may know that Gladstone comics tackled reprinting some classic Barks work in the 1980's and 1990's, providing high quality reprints with new colors, quality binding and paper, and an obvious fan-like love for the subject. This was Gladstones' first Comic Album series, and this is Uncle Scrooge #1 from 1987. But maybe what you really need to know is what stories are in this particular book!
1) "The Mine's of King Solomon", a 27 page adventure story with Uncle Scrooge, Donald Duck and the nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie. It was originally printed in Dell Four Color Comics Uncle Scrooge September-November 1957, with art and script by Carl Barks. This terrific adventure story has Uncle Scrooge taking the gang with him on a trip to 1,200 places in 69 countries to check on his investments. The ticket is as big as a suitcase. All along the way the nephews are making mayhem with their Junior Woodchucks animal whistles that work a little too good. They land up following a lead on the location to King Solomons Mine, but danger awaits. 2) "Dollar Across the River" a 1 page gag from the same issue, art and script by Barks. 3) "A Honey of a Hen" originally from Dell Comics Grandma Duck's Farm Friends of July -September 1959. A 7 page story, with art by Carl Barks and script by Vic Lockman. 4) "Easy Ways to Get Rich" 1 page gag originally published in Dell Comics Uncle Scrooge #21 March-May 1958. Art and script by Carl Barks. 5) "Lost in Black Forest" originally published in Dell Comics Walt Disney Comics & Stories #227 from August 1959, a classic 10 page adventure comedy with art and script by Barks. A Junior Woodchucks story, where the boys have a contest, can Uncle Donald win a prize by hiding in the forest longer than 8 hours and evading the Junior Woodchucks in a lost hiker exercise. All in all, a great group of stories, from a great series of comic albums.

Great stories - well worth it!!,

This review is from: Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge: The Mines of King Solomon (Gladstone Comic Album Series No. 1) (Paperback)
These are marvelous, classic stories from the fertile mind and pen of the great Carl Barks. As far as the binding problems go, I had the same problem, and re-glued my Disney Gladstone books as well... I think this stock of books is just kind of old, and the glue has dried up into nothing over the years. Anyway, the re-gluing worked fine and my kid and I enjoy reading these books a lot. If you're just looking for reader copies, this series offers some great cartoon art at a very reasonable price. (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain children's book reviews)
