This book is an exceptional one, covering the remarkable life and work of Walt Kelly. The reproductions of his art are carefully selected but comprehensive. The chapters set his life, times, and work in thoughtful context. I believe that the great importance of his work at Disney is better presented here than it has been in any previous study. Walt is forthrightly portrayed as the hard-working, greatly-talented, humane, progressive fellow that he was. The chronology has been exhaustively researched, and likely will speak to the generations born since Walt's death. In particular, the chapters by Walt's good friend Ward Kimball, and Walt's stepson and protege Scott Daley, are among the best such contributions that I have ever read. I confess to being one of that tiny, shrinking population of folks who know at first hand what it is like to create and communicate via India ink, pencil, brush and pen, and on board or cel - this book will let you see how that feels, and why it can be so powerful. Fine, passionate work by these authors, contributors, and curators of Kelly's wonderful ouvre! May this book help more of us "with tinny blasts on tiny trumpets, go forth to meet the foe", knowing full well that "the foe" is, after all, "us", and that we ought to be gentle persons even in the worst of melees. Also, that the highest and best use afterward for even the bloodiest battlefield may be to spread out the pallets and hampers for a picnic. That way, the tads may play again in the sun, while we "adults" chill and heal from our mutually-inflicted wounds.

This book is filled with beautiful reproductions of Walt Kelly's artwork, much of it so obscure I've never seen it before, but the text is so riddled with mistakes - about Kelly, about his work, and even just English usage - it was a real disappointment. I still await the definitive biography on the brilliant Walt Kelly.

Just got this book and I'm really impressed. Read the essays (there are different chapters written by different authors, like a museum catalogue, including a very interesting remembrance by Scott Daley, Kelly's stepson). Some complained about a lot of typos, I don't agree, there are a few, but I've never seen a book without 'em. As to the content of the essays, I think the opinions are well researched, informed and interesting. BUT, I bought the book for artwork and there's tons of it, much of which I've never seen before. The design of the book is fantastic; the quality of the book is outstanding. If you love Pogo this is the ultimate companion.

This book gives a good look at a very versatile artist and his many projects. Best known for his cartoon character "Pogo possum",Walt Kelley was father to many varied cartoon characters. Personally, I preferred Walts early work over his famous possum. He not only produced quality work for the Walt Disney company but created memorable products such as Peter Wheat, Our Gang comics, and a series of comics on Fairy Tales, Mother Goose, Easter and Christmas stories which have become classics. An interesting book.

The illustrations are great. There are some details that are interesting, even fascinating, particularly about the 4 years at Disney. But the book is full of misspellings (Gerry Trudeau -- twice?), typos, blowsy, bloviated text. This is hagiography at its poorest. I thought of making a gift of it to a Pogo aficionado, but decided that I would be ashamed to do so. Definitely not worth the money.

My husband really enjoys reading this book. He is always pointing out new anecdotes and stories he has learned.even though he has been a fan a long time.
