Book Description

October 1, 2002
The paintings of Walton Ford (b. 1960) combine superb draftsmanship with layers of allegorical and lyrical symbolism. "It's as if John James Audubon had been visited by the spirit of Hieronymous Bosch" is how one critic has described the unsettling impact of Ford's powerful works, with their sometimes violent imagery and their trenchant political and social commentary on history, colonialism, and the precarious relationship between man and animal.

This striking volume is the first overview of Ford's dazzling paintings-and the only book currently in print on this increasingly popular artist. Printed to coincide with a Ford exhibition at the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York, the book includes an essay by screenwriter Steven Katz and an interview with the artist by Dodie Kazanjian, who, in a recent article in Vogue, concluded: "A Walton Ford painting can be enjoyed on many levels, but it just so happens that the entry level is dazzling draftsmanship and sheer, knockout visual pleasure."

5.0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous book about a brilliant painter, October 20, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Walton Ford: Tigers of Wrath, Horses of Instruction (Hardcover)
"Tigers of Wrath, Horses of Instruction" (the title is from William Blake) is the first monograph of the work of Walton Ford, a contemporary, New York-born painter whose enormous, Audobon-inspired watercolors are among the most beautiful, most thoughtful, and most disturbing works produced today. His often baffling work, examining global culture clashes told through fantastically-rendered paintings of exotic birds and animals, is very well explicated in a scholarly introductory essay by Steven Katz and a useful interview with the artist conducted by Dodie Kazanjian. All in all, this is probably the most gorgeous book you'll see this year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Important Contemporary American Artist, September 25, 2002
By
This review is from: Walton Ford: Tigers of Wrath, Horses of Instruction (Hardcover)
Walton Ford's watercolors are among the most beautiful offered by any contemporary artist today. The context of each work is intelligent, thoughtful and imaginative while the execution of each work is brilliant. The book's release is in conjunction with a major exhibition of recent work by Walton Ford at the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York City in October 2002. Serious art collectors, museum curators and art lovers should purchase a copy of the book for their libraries: the book is certain to become a collectors item.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, February 21, 2006

Ford is a master painter -- although I imagine one must see his work in person to appreciate the fabulous detail -- and the book is a great and affordable way to have his work in the house.
