Synopsis (from the back cover)
She's 40. And just now learning to read and write.
John-Boy's pupil is Verdie (Lynn Hamilton), a proud woman with reason to be. She's raised five children after her husband died, earning her own way and overcoming barriers of race. Verdie's pride won't let her admit her lack of schooling. But John-Boy, with an insight that shows he's a born teacher, finds a way to introduce her to reading and writing. Verdie makes exciting progress - until an incident beyond John-Boy's control wounds the ambitious student's pride. Now John-Boy faces a new challenge: can he bring Verdie back to the lessons meaning as much to him as they do to her?
