A gripping read,
By Ruth (Reno, NV) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Waltzing with the Dead (Hardcover)
From the moment you read the first heartwrenching poem to the very last dark, romantic story, Russell Davis will keep you turning pages with the power of his words. The images, characters, and stories he creates, covering a wide range of genre, are compelling. Whether it's a new twist on the Arthurian legend or the intricate plot of an abused wife seeking her only escape, you will be captivated by Davis's writing. This was one of the most enjoyable reads I've had in a very long time, and I recommend it to anyone.

This review is from: Waltzing with the Dead (Hardcover)
WALTZING WITH THE DEAD is a remarkable collection of short stories and poems that sometimes leave you with chills running up and down your spine. It is separated into four parts, and each section contains a gripping tale that will leave you pondering the meaning behind each story.Part one, entitled "Sacrifices," starts off with a short poem about life and death and the choices you make that impact your life. The poem foreshadows the theme in the first short story "Monster." Tera is an unborn child who feels deep love for her mother. When complications arise, will Tera make the ultimate sacrifice to save her mother? Gordon makes the ultimate sacrifice in "The Seven Year Itch" by agreeing to let his girlfriend of seven years act out a sexual fantasy with a total stranger. When Shauna awakens to find herself tied and blindfolded, will she be able to let loose and enjoy it? Or will she come to realize that some dreams are nothing compared to the love she shares with Gordon? Part two, entitled "Of Memories," starts off with the short story "The Sleepers" about a family fleeing from the Chicago riots. Darien Blake is running for safety with his daughter in his arms when his wife starts to fall behind. When Darien finds a safe hiding spot for his daughter he leaves her to go and save his wife. But he is too late. A gang of men found her first and left her for dead. But did she really die that horrible day? Part three, entitled "Traveler," leaves its mark with the first short story, "The Morality of Feeling Good," about the information superhighway known as the World Wide Web. The web does have its good points, like spanning different cultures, researching diseases, and making new friends. The downside is everywhere you go you are bombarded with sex. Websites that depict every sexual deviance known to man. The president wants these websites gone. Think of the children, is his motto. Then the president finds himself alone after the death of his wife, and the World Wide Web becomes an escape for him. He meets his Internet girlfriend and sex takes on a whole new meaning. Part four, entitled "Waltzing With The Dead," will have you recalling scary dreams that felt so real you wondered if they really were. In "Dead Tired," Jack has one of these dreams. He dreams of dying and wakes up battered and bruised and wonders how he got that way. You see, life hasn't always been easy for Jack. When he was a little boy, he was constantly abused by his father. When he grew up he became a little like his father and was abusive to his girlfriend Sue. Sue finally left him, and that's when the dreams began. The dreams take on a new meaning when Jack learns who his "attackers" are. Sometimes you can't escape the sins of your past. Russell Davis is a master storyteller who weaves reality into each of his bone-chilling stories. WALTZING WITH THE DEAD should come with a warning label...if you start it in the evening you will be reading way into the night. All of the characters have their own dilemmas that add spice to their stories. As the stories progress, the tension ratchets up higher and higher. This collection is an absolute treasure and well deserves its Perfect 10 rating. It will remain on my keeper shelf for a long time to come, where it will be read over and over again. If you are looking for something with an edge, pick up a copy of this book; you will not be disappointed.(...)

An Eclectic, Romantic Collection ...,

Waltzing With the Dead is one of the most unique short story collections I've ever had the pleasure to encounter. While the cover art, and the majority of the stories, lend this a fantasy-genre slant, don't let that fool you. WWTD is a complex puzzle of words. There are four sections in the book, each prefaced by a long poem by the author. The sections are breakdowns of the content, and the poetry is top notch. Many of the stories then have snatches of the poetry preceding their text, adding clarity to the structural breakdown of the work presented.
