4.0 out of 5 stars At Five We Blast Off, July 22, 2002

I bought this CD because of the song "At Five We Drive" which I randomly heard on an Internet broadcast one day. It sounds like what you REALLY wanted Frank Black (what with his apocalyptic moody guitars, crazy chord tendencies, odd tempos, nervous and edgy but sweet voice, and Space obsessions) to sound like after the Pixies or his first coupla solo albums. It also sounds like something that could easily have been on a Sebadoh album as well. After I got the CD, that song "At Five..." has now taken the place of one of my all-time favorite songs. The rest of the album is not consistently as kinetic as this song... but that's not necessarily a bad thing. There is good writing here overall. Excellent playing. I like the CD as is today, 6 years after it was first released, but I can see it growing on me even more. Definitely worth the money. Again, for "At Five We Drive" alone, I would have paid double the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mauler Pop, December 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Wammo (Audio CD)
I've been listening to this album a lot lately, when I first heard it I was disappointed that the direction of guitar was being downplayed, and a pop direction was being focused. But I came back to the album and realized that aside from the slightly marred production and a couple bad missteps in song direction in the songs 'zapped'and 'Wammo'that this is a pretty great pop record. Brent's drumming on this album is so heavily propulsive, he provides the base for the whole groove on the record. The guitars are toned down, to focus on pop song structure but pop like the beatles trying to play their instruments inside a tank with you listening on the outside. 'Voltage' reminds one of Wire, although I don't think the band would ever admit that. 'Splat', 'Colours'and 'D thing'are just great rock songs that deserve a space on the shelf along with other great rock songs from a previous era like 'Strawberry fields' and 'Won't Get Fooled Again'
