4.0 out of 5 stars Debut CD a good sign, February 14, 2001
By Jeff Jenks (Hinsdale, Illinois United States) - See all my reviews
Right now O.A.R. is the Dave Matthews Band of the Midwest. DMB started in Virgina...playing the local scene and growing a fan base through show-stopping performances and concert tape distribution. O.A.R., hailing from Ohio State is doing the same thing. Last week they released their record label debut "Risen." It sounds more professional than the other two previous albums, but I still love to throw in the moreless homemade "The Wanderer." This CD displays O.A.R.'s young, inexperienced side...hell, they created the CD provide the regulars with something to listen to. I have been listening to O.A.R. for almost two years now. Their new album is great, but get a good feel for O.A.R. first and find the roots of their beginnings. "The Wanderer" is an accomplishment not many 20-year old bands can claim...and it tells you something when you can put this CD on--in any situation--and just let it play through...listening to one great original song after another. In today's music industry, that is the most respectable things a band can accomplish.

Eat your hearts out NSYNC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quit Comparing O.A.R. to DMB!, March 21, 2005
The only comparison between the two is that they both tend to have long drawn out melodies. Whoever invented that analogy should be shot in the face. O.A.R. is amazing. If you actually know the band you will know that this entire C.D. was written and recorded while the band was still in HIGH SCHOOL! Blow your mind at all? Give the CD a listen and you'll be amazed. Don't judge on what you've read or the 30 second samples. Quite frankly if you have any interest in ska or reggae or jam bands, or just happy feel good musict actually listen to the band and I assure you will you will love it. Once you hear the CD, go see them live, they put on an amazing show

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow this is good, September 5, 2001
By Dave (Herndon, VA United States) - See all my reviews
Great CD. It was an impulse buy that really paid off. The reviewer that called OAR the "Dave Matthews Band of the Midwest" got my interest enough to buy it. However, they have a sound that's truly their own. A great mix of Folk and Reggae, I love every song on the CD (except maybe "Black Rock", the only mediocre song on the album.) I highly recommend this to everybody, it has an appeal that's almost universal. I like it, my wife likes it, even my kids like it. However, my dog is indifferent. Plus it's a great conversation piece, you can be one of those guys who talk about music nobody's ever heard of.

This is a great CD of a lot of OAR's earlier stuff. I've been listening to them since they were playing in local bars but never actually got this CD till now. It's great.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic
i heard this cd at a bar, liked it and bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars No DMB, but pretty good anyway.
Great Album. Stop comparing them to Dave Matthews Band. No one compares to Dave Matthews Band that's just the way it is. DMB is god, OAR is pretty good too.
