Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The broadcast version of El Hazard repeats most of the characters and situations from the popular OAV series. The megalomaniacal Jinnai attacks Makoto's high-voltage science experiment, inadvertently transporting them, his sister Nanami, and hard-drinking history professor Mr. Fujisawa from Shinonome High to the parallel world of El Hazard. After meeting with Princess Rune of Roshtaria, Makoto and Fujisawa set off to find the powerful Priestesses of Water, Wind, and Fire, who may be able to help them return to Earth: Miz Mistal, Afura Mann, and Shayla-Shayla. Meanwhile, Jinnai has become virtual ruler of the insectlike Bugrom, and Nanami has established herself as a chef. Although many of the story elements survive from the earlier adventures, the tone is much sillier, with Jinnai's snide egotism played for laughs and the Bugrom representing less of a threat. Rated 13 Up: Risqué humor, brief nudity, minor profanity, violence, alcohol and tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

4.0 out of 5 stars El Hazard - The Wanderers, October 14, 2001

This review is from: The Wanderers - El Hazard TV Series - The Adventure Begins (Vol. 1) (DVD)
This series is the TV remake of the Magnificent World OAV set. The Wanderers takes a differant turn in the beginning by having Jinnai Sabotage Makoto's machine thus sending the cast to El Hazard. In addition to the opening story change, they changed the personality of Iferita, and created a love interrest between Mikoto and the princess. The other major change is the deletion of the princesses sister who makes up some of the funniest moments of the OAV set. Also one major note, the Alternate world set takes place based on the Magnificent World set and not the Wanderers. This set is good to get only to see the alternate version of how it started, but is worth it, for its own merit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, worth watching, March 21, 2002

I first got hooked onto El-Hazard through the TV series version, rather than the OVA series. All I can say is, wow, and I don't regret watching a single episode. It's got humor, some action, and best of all great personalities among the characters. While the TV series is good, I felt that the first OVA did a better job (especially in plot and humor), but both are still worth watching.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unlike most, I didn't go head over heels for this title...., March 25, 2004

I have been hearing about this series for years now, so I thought I'd give it a try. And yes, I did like it, but I also haven't had the urge to watch it in over a year. And I am going to sell it here on Amazon sometime soon.

See, while the art was pretty, I just couldn't bring myself to like any of the characters. I can't explain it--there just wasn't any magic there. There were all just standing around, trying to decide what to do, rather than taking any form of action. Some of their voices annoyed me as well.

All in all, I recommend that everyone watch this at least once. Maybe you'll like it better than I did.
