This is a dandy little device - Set-up was quick and easy and I was playing a DVD within 5 minutes of opening the box. This machine has great features for the price, and seems well-made.
Another reviewer has commented that the tray does not fully extend -- while this may be unconventional, it is still easy to insert and remove discs, so I don't see this as a problem. The weak point is the remote, which is not as responsive as it could be; you need to very firmly depress the small keys. Overall, I'm very pleased with the value of this DVD player.

Surprisingly Good,
This review is from: Wanlida/Malata DVD-806 Progressive-Scan DVD Player (Electronics)
I've been holding out on buying a DVD player for a long time since my computer has a DVD drive already. (...). Yes, a couple of reviews before gripe about how this player doesn't have RCA 5.1 (Hey - this player is cheap!) and it seems a little awkward to put in a DVD (the tray pops out about 97% of the way, with 3% of the circle that holds the DVD unexposed and inside the DVD player) but you know what? It took all of 7 minutes to plug it in and make it connect to my TV/VCR/Stereo/PS2 setup, it plays my DVDs, and it even plays my VCDs (even though there's no mention of VCD playback capability in the manual or the box it came in). It's really slim (1.25" height) and fits nicely stacked on my VCR, under my PS2, so I am very happy with my purchase (...). So if you're some kind of stereophile or videophile that must have all the latest options and gizmos even from an inexpensive DVD player, then this one isn't for you. However, if you just want your DVDs, CDs, VCDs, and MP3 CDs to play, then this is a very good deal.

Good player for the price,

This is a player with very nice features for the price. It has a built-in counter/display, which most of the other cheap players omit. Having both types of digital output is useful. I also like the slim design. It seems to play every type of dvd media quite nicely. It will not play any .avi or .mpg files on either dvd or cd. It may play vcd's, but I don't have any of those. One feature that I like is that it will play mp3's from a dvd-r, and there are no restrictions on the number of files in a folder either. Very nice. That way you can play music for a couple of days nonstop without having to swap disks... The remote is better than most of the low end competition, both ergonomically and in terms of available functions.
Update 3/17/05: I have tested a VCD and an SVCD, the unit will play both without any problems, fast forward, rewind and all other functions are implemented. However, it did have an overscan problem with the SVCD I played, a small part of the screen on the left and possibly right edge also was cut off. Update 10/6/07: We now own 2 of these players and both are failing to turn on normally, they freeze several times and have to be power cycled repeatedly before starting to function. Once they are on and not turned off they still work perfect. Looks like some really cheap capacitors were used in the power circuitry that are now ruining the players. It is truly a shame as these are otherwise outstanding machines. We now keep both of them on at all times, and as of yet they still work.

Nice player, but no USB Port or VGA Output,
This review is from: Wanlida/Malata DVD-806 Progressive-Scan DVD Player (Electronics)
I really liked this player, but it doesn't have the advertised USB Port or VGA Output. I had great plans for the VGA Output....lol
But it is a nice player for the price, I have played several DVDs without a hitch. It looks nice and comes with a digital display, which is unheard of in a player of this price range. So even though it didn't have VGA Output; the primary reason I chose this unit. I still liked it enough to give it 4 Stars.

I have been a supporter of the "low end" of the DVD player market, so I tried out the Malata DVD player. Everything was fine for a few weeks, but today it died loading a disk. Nothing was jammed, it just stopped halfway during the loading. After that, it was Dead, Jim. I think that early life failure is an issue for low-end DVD players. Ho hum.

Rebate came just after my unit died,
This review is from: Wanlida/Malata DVD-806 Progressive-Scan DVD Player (Electronics)
I agree with all the reviews. It was a great unit--while it lasted. I had high hopes for Malata--my dad had another China-made DVD player and it worked flawlessly in a high-end stereo system. Well, the Malata arrived at my home just in time to relieve a dying DVD player. It worked great for about 2 weeks, then one day it just quit playing CDs and VCDs properly--it paused for seconds every half minute or so! (...)! Fine, I thought. I had a dedicated CD player--I'll just use the Malata for DVDs. (...), and the Malata is starting to eat my DVDs alive--my wife put in a DVD, and when she opened the tray it was empty!!! Man, oh man, should I send this thing in to repair while it's still under the 90 days of warranty, or should I just save the postage money for another DVD player?

I was pleasantly surprised with the features this player has considering the economical price. I have only played DVD-R and DVD+R discs and the response time for loading and its ability to start/play the movie have been extremely fast. I like the built in counter/display, which is very useful for monitoring the progress of your movie and this is definitely omitted by other "low end" players. Even though the loading tray doesn't come all the way out, most users shouldn't have a problem with it. I don't have a single complaint with the remote that has worked perfect so far. The design of the player seems to be of good quality and I love its size. My only concern is the durability of the player in terms of longevity. Only time will tell.

A whole lot of DVD player for a little price,

I have had this player for about 2 weeks now and I am pleased with my purchase. The things I like about it are as follows: Its cheap. I wasn't expecting much. It is very slim. The dvd tray moves very quickly and movies load quickly also. It plays DVD+R and DVD-R movies that my other dvd player won't even read.
There are a few things I am a little concerned about with it and that is its sturdiness. The DVD tray feels like it would snap off if I placed anything other than a dvd in it. Also the remote is very cheap. The buttons work ok on the remote but it is not put together with quality materials. Other than those few concerns, I would recommend purchasing one.

Well worth the money,
This review is from: Wanlida/Malata DVD-806 Progressive-Scan DVD Player (Electronics)
After one month, I'm quite happy with this DVD player: it's thin, reasonably attractive, and able to play everything I've thrown at it, even disks rejected by my other players for having too many scratches. It does come with the worst remote control I've ever used, however, with weak power, tiny and hard-to-press buttons, and a counter-intuitive layout. The player is 110-240V and 50/60 Mhz compatible, and allows easy switching between PAL and NTSC output. 25 bucks is a very good deal.

The player is not region free,

The player beeing sold in the USA has been modified, so it cannot play other regions (except region 1 and 0). This player is not hackable. If you want play DVDs from other regions DON'T buy this player. There are many other players that have DVD region hacks.
