These productions present an overview of the period narrated by the familiar voices of George C. Scott and Charlton Heston, respectively. Contemporary writings spoken by other voices liven the narrative to some extent. The challenge is to figure out the intended audience for these productions. The Civil War narrates an enormously complex series of events; to reduce that into six hours of talking is neither satisfying nor especially instructive. In the Giants of Philosophy, the same is true. The worldviews of Plato and Aristotle are heavygoing in any format. Spoken word does not make the work of these two great thinkers any more accessible. These productions could be useful to high school or community college students needing a broad overview from which to choose a topic for closer examination. Simon & Schuster has purchased the Giants of Philosophy series from Knowledge Products; this is a repackaging of selections from the series. Rather than selling them separately as Knowledge Products did, this package has Plato and Aristotle together. Knowledge Products produced an excellent product, so it's good that these audio presentations will be available more widely. Heston's low and serious voice is great for presenting the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle. Heston reads clearly at a great pace. There is also a host of performers reading the various quoted passages that enhances the presentation. The script is well written and makes for a good introduction to these great philosophers. M.L.C.
