3 Pro's & a Con,
By A Customer
This review is from: I Want to Learn Sign Language: Everyday Sign Language Lessons For Children 5-12 (Volume 1) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
My family and I (ages 10 months to 30 years) were all watching this video together, when suddenly the ten month old tried to sign with us! Of course, she did not get the signs correct, but the movie had us energized enough that she wanted to join us. One thing that I really like about this video is that the teacher teaches the signs using English word order (instead of ASL order), but points out that the word order in ASL sometimes differs of that in English. She sometimes makes it a point to demonstrate saying a phrase in both variations of the language (i.e., English word order and ASL order). Although this is not the best practice gramatically, I think that it helps one learn to recognize signs, especially when one is a child. Another big pro of this video is that deaf individuals, with various speaking abilities, are featured throughout the tape. I am a beginning ASL student myself and am blown away by the differences between one deaf individual that I meet and another, sometimes increasing or decreasing my level of difficulty with communicating with him or her. Being exposed to such things while first learning should maybe help with that. Also, phrases and words are repeated so that the viewer can practice with the children after they learn a new word or phrase. The only negative I have is that the plot is weaker than the plot on the videos from the other ASL series I own. Overall, I like the tape. It is appropriate for children, and I found myself learning some news words as well. It is not a purchase that I regret making.

Nice for Kids, but Not a Baby Signing Video,
This review is from: I Want to Learn Sign Language: Everyday Sign Language Lessons For Children 5-12 (Volume 1) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
We borrowed these videos from the library and my older son and I really enjoyed them. I liked the way they didn't ignore the fact that signs can be used in ASL order or English word order. The story was engaging enough. The kids were great.
I wouldn't recommend these for a young child or for one with a significant language disability, but they would be nice for an elementary or middle school age child who wants to know more about signing. We didn't purchase them, because we were looking for something for a child with a severe language disability.

I Want to Learn Sign Language 1,

Very Good. My children have enjoyed using this video to learn sign language. It gives a lot of signs kids would want to know and use. It also includes a brief history of the beginnings of American Sign Language. It also includes Signed English. My children are looking forward to the second volume.
